[h=1]Bowe Bergdahl, once missing U.S. soldier, charged with desertion[/h] By Dan Lamothe March 25 at 2:00 PM

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. soldier who was recovered in Afghanistan last spring after five years in captivity, faces charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, according to his lawyer.

Eugene Fidell, Bergdahl’s attorney, told The Washington Post that his client was handed a charge sheet on Tuesday. Army officials announced they will provide an update in his case at 3:30 p.m. at Fort Bragg, N.C., but declined to discuss new developments ahead of the news conference.

Bergdahl, 28, went missing from his base in Paktika province on June 30, 2009, and is believed to have grown disillusioned with the U.S. military’s mission in Afghanistan. He was held captive in Pakistan by the Haqqani network, an insurgent group allied with the Taliban, until a deal brokered through the government of Qatar was reached last year.

I never understood why we traded 5 dangerous terrorists for Bergdahl's release.

We did it because we value life.

Yes, we do value life, Jim, but those were top dangerous Taliban commanders, and CNN stated that one of the Taliban commanders that were released has returned to the taliban, which can put many lives in danger.

Better to bring an American home and we handle whatever punishment needed than have him in the hands of the Taliban.

Maybe yes and maybe no. If they decide to ignore their agreement to stay away from the war effort, but instead decide to go back into business with the Taliban, then perhaps they would kill more of our guys. And besides, the last pictures that I saw of Bergdahl, he did not appear to be leading a charmed life. I think that he probably wanted to come home, even if it means prison time. He will be treated here better than over there.

I am sure these supposed "dangerous" terrorists will be tracked just to find out what they do.

The latest I heard this morning is that he will be slapped with a Dishonorable Discharge and sent on his way.

Thanks for the info, QuickSilver. The info on why Bergdahl left his unit in the news today is because he was planning to come right back and he left his base to report on misconduct in his unit, and his lawyer said that the only way he could get any attention was to get the info to a general officer. That will be used as his defense.

That goes against the letter he left when leaving that stated he was leaving to start a new life and didn't want to fight for America.
