When my kids were growing up, DH and I instituted a "snitch tax." Unless there was a serious threat to life, limb or (important) property, we didn't want to hear about it. Squabbles and missteps were theirs to sort out - including minor problems at school. We didn't need to know every time one of them was scolded by the teacher. If teachers had problems with their behavior, they knew how to contact us.

Every snitch cost them a dime. Given that their allowance was $1.00 a week, snitches were costly.
Can't tell you how much it reduced the tattling...
