Senior grandmother stabbed in her garage in a gated community by a car thief.

A 77 year old grandmother was stabbed to death in her garage when she surprised a car thief. She lived in a GATED community? The car was recovered with in 24 hours then a suspect arrest with in 24 hours after the suspect's picture was made public. Her son who had just come to visit for the holidays discovered his mom's body.

Gated communities are supposed to stop things like this. Could be a follow with a tracking device theft where car thieves put a tracker on the car they want to steal then go to the owner's home later. She did have a Lexus SUV which would be a target for thieves.

There are cell phone apps one can download for free to detect these trackers wether one has an Iphone or not.

WATCH YOUR SURROUNDINGS where ever you go. Look for people looking at you or just hanging around doing nothing. They might be hunting prey ie a person or car.
 

My gated community is largely "protected" by a 6' tall hedge. The gates are unmanned, and can easily be walked around. Also,a bike or motorcycle can get around the secondary gate, which is about a 100 yards from my back yard. So basically they just keep out idle, nosy folks. That's why I have a pistol and ammo, as does my SO. I've not heard of a break-in or burglary in the 2 years I've been here, but ya never know.

I was a process server for a family business. I never had any problem getting into Gated Complexes & "Security Buildings." I simply followed someone else when they walked in. When they drove through an automatic gate, I just drove in behind them.
The real purpose of gated communities is to charge higher rent, while providing an illusion of security.

As I said back in post 8, it just keeps out a few nosy people. Plus Seventh Day Adventists, and other riff raff. Per your example, it is not terribly effective.

That is precisely what happens.. people walk in or drive in behind someone else when the electric gates open... but even if they don't.. the walls and fences are quite easily surmountable ..
 
Even if the gate is locked, and all residents and workers are trustworthy, it's still easy for someone to get in as the guest of a resident or worker.

I lived in an area where many people had female servants. Someone told me that crimes tended to be committed by servants' boyfriends who came to visit.

Also, people have parties, increasing the odds of sketchy people getting into the neighborhood. Anyone can wander off and not be missed.

Tell that to the relatives of the lady who was murdered. Crossing your fingers in ignorant denial is not the way to go through life.

Yeah, I know such things only happen to people in the news. That's exactly what most people who were murdered probably thought. Well, they themselves finally made the news, too.

Not that a postal worker committed such an offense but a gate does not a fortress make.

Of course, and of the >700 families in my little community, not a one things that the gates, etc, will keep out a person with evil intent. What it does do is, mostly, keep out the nuisances. And at times the gates are removed for other reasons, such as hurricanes, etc, here in Florida. Also, both gates are equipped with multiple cameras that capture all traffic, coming and going. So if you tailgate your way in, and something nefarious happens, security can determine who you are.

This is not my first gated community, and most likely won't be my last.
