A partial shutoff of Russian gas is already piling pressure on Germany’s economy. In July, we estimated that a complete shutoff of the remaining (40 percent of) Russian gas supplies would reduce gross domestic product by almost 3 percent next year and raise inflation significantly. The effects could be even worse if the winter is particularly cold.
 

As far as I'm aware, and contrary to the Breitbart article, the UK isn't currently in a electrical energy crisis. 2 coal power stations have been put on standby just in case its needed due to the current drop in temperature we have here now. It would seem to make sence to do that. The National Grid call them "winter contingency coal units". Its nothing new, they have been placed on standby in past years too. For now, according to the National Grid, it's just a precautionary measure -- thare are other contingency measure they can call upon first. I'm sure Breitbart likes playing up to thair readerships ignorance with a pathetic headline.

I belive the UK currently gets just 2% of its electricity from coal -- down from 9% in 2016.

40% from gas; 25% from wind & solar; 15% nuclear; 13% other types of renewables; 4% oil; 2% hydro. These ratios change slightly depending on prices & market forces. At times of high demand the UK might import electricity from France; Netherlands & Ireland via cables under the sea. At times the UK might export in the same way.

I think the European Union gets (or used to get) around 35% of its gas from Russia. The UK gets only 3% of its gas from Russia. Around 50% of UK gas comes from its oil fields in the North Sea. About a futher 33% from Norway. Norway being the worlds third largest natural gas exporter.

The UK has 3 large Liquified Natural Gas terminals & infrastructure to support it. Importing LNG from Denmark, Belgium, France, & the good old US of A. I think the UK is going to be ok this winter.

As of typing (14th December), there is currently 9% of UK's electricity prodution going to France via cables.

Whether or not you believe in the Climate Change lie, we are going to run out of coal and oil. We just aren't making anymore dinosaurs, or million-year old buried forests. So, should we behave like pigs and use it all up, screwing future generations? If the future will have to have clean renewable energy, why not now? And leave what's left in the ground to our great grandchildren.
 
I just ordered three tons of coal from my supplier. I always ask if he has coal first because you never know. Hope he brings it before Christmas Eve. Saturday after next is supposed to be frigid here.
