What kind of accent do you have?

Lived here, lived there, (as I mentioned on another thread, hung around with Ockers & Yarpies), did a little traveling.

1) 1967 or '68, lived in Toronto in an apartment with a bunch of other guys, one, a fairly 'non-accented' guy from England, & I, (having heard of a Scotsman who hitched south in full regalia, kilt, sporran, the lot, and never waited for a ride), decided to head to the beach...Atlantic City and environs.

My friend, from somewhere, obtained a bowler hat and an umbrella, and off we went....put in some beach time and eventually took a break in Philadelphia.

Hot day, went for a beer......bar virtually empty...got talking to the female bartender who eventually asked my friend where he was from.....turning to me she said "You, you're from around here, but where's HE from?".

2) Winter of 1997...camped on the beach in the Baja.

Next to us were a German couple, residents of Lake Tahoe.....I'd practice my limited German on them.

An American friend of theirs, who had been stationed in Germany, showed up, and over lunch one day the topic turned to languages.

The German wife acknowledged that their friend had a more comprehensive vocabulary than I did, but then turned to him and said "But YOU sound like a G.I. while he (Nemo2) sounds like a German".

I don't know much about accents. Yet most don't think they have one, and they do. Growing up I had a thick Boston accent, like JFK. I thought I talked just like on TV. When I was in the Navy, I met some guys with a " y'all" accent, who claimed they didn't have an accent. I don't know what it is, but there's something about people not thinking they have an accent??

I love the Boston accent..(y)

Canadian. Although some Canadians insist I have some other accent and demand to know where I'm from. Now I just shrug and say maybe I have an impediment. That shuts them up.

Americans (and others) sometimes say they know I'm Canadian because of how I pronounce "out" and "about." I don't understand this. To me there's a distinct difference between "about" and "a boot."

When I lived in Mexico, I and other expats found that when we visited our families, they said we had Mexican accents.

Now that I'm hosting an online game (audio only), I make an effort to enunciate clearly, like a radio host. Actually I was raised to speak this way, but abandoned it when I became working class.
