If you're standing in the midsts of 10 dead, 12 wounded, I don't think it matters is it's a mass murder or mass shooting. And shooter and those unknown to the shooter incidents account for a very small percentage, it brings into question the need of guns for personal protection, as most gun deaths are suicides, and victims known to the shooter. If you're killed by a hand gun or an assault rifle, it isn't that important. Since we don't have strict gun control in the US, we don't know if it will. There's absolutely no way to judge if media coverage has not influenced others. Maybe the students at Stoneman Douglas High might have a different take on that.
Maybe I'm missing the point, the article seems to be making the point that mass shootings aren't that bad?
There's a "questionable" need of guns because of suicides and some killings are by someone known or related to the victim(s).
Seriously? So if those incidents were responsible for 90 percent of the murder figures, how about those attacked on the street, or carjacked, or the seventy-year-old woman attacked in her home by a home invader? How many of those lives are unimportant and to be tolerated because of a gun ban?
Cold blooded.
We don't have strict gun control in the U.S.A.? Ever hear about the laws in California, New York, Illinois and some other "progressive" states? Those laws are easily found on the Web.
There is no way to know if media coverage has influenced people?
C'mon! That's been the purpose of books and newspapers and other venues of information since the days of the Greeks.
And what does a High School shooting have to do with this subject?
If 25,000 people out of 300 million people were killed each year, it makes sense to ban guns and endanger the lives of all others still alive? How about worrying about disarming the predators before the honest folks.
No one hinted in the least that mass shootings "aren't that bad".
Laws have to be enforced as to getting help for those sickos whose dangerous nature has been obvious for some time, and who have been reported to the "authorities" with negative results.
I am almost 90, and am totally incapable of defending myself on the street or in my home without a weapon. I guess I should die because honest people should never have a weapon for self-defense? However, the bad guys will always have a weapon because bad guys do not adhere to laws.
Oh, sure. Stop the manufacturing of weapons in the U.S.A. That will do it. WRONG! The Asiatic countries, the Slavic countries of Europe, and a bunch of countries in South America will rejoice by manufacturing guns to fill the need of the bad guys in the U.S.A.
Ever hear of smuggling? Bad guys will buy them by the case as they are smuggled in. So, now we have bad guys again with guns. And how about the unarmed honest people? The don't have guns because honest people adhere to the law - and in this case, adhering to the law will cause their deaths, and possibly the deaths of family members.
But, hey, gee, we'll be GUN FREE country. Right?
