To keep the ham bone or not?

I cooked a half ham Monday. I have been enjoying it for the past few days. Went in the kitchen and broke it down for the freezer, some for sandwiches, breakfast and casseroles. These will go in the freezer.

Back in the day I would freeze the bone to cook in a big pot of beans. Mind you this was when my husband was alive, the son was here. Mom lived just around the corner, I always took here some. I kept with it after he passed but now he is gone, Mom is gone) (she lived here for 2 years, son and fiance married after living with me for 3 1/2 years and bought their own home.

I am thinking I should just throw it out, I have enough ham for the freezer, I could use some of that for a small bean soup. What do you think? Is there some other way I could use the ham bone?

I buy a lot of bone-in hams (very cheap when on sale), and I've considered what to do with the bones.

I'm not a soup person. What I do is scrape as much meat off the bone as I can, and eat the meat. (There's usually quite a lot.) Then I throw the bone out.

Apparently you're not supposed to give ham bones to pets.

I have read about using bones to make a broth to water plants with, but the salt and other additives in ham would probably be bad for plants.

You could bop an intruder over the head with it.

Whatever you do, don't, I repeat do NOT feed the hambone to a dog. It can cause serious painful health issues. It doesn't break down easily, is too salty, and too fatty. Not that you would have but just throwing that into the mix for the sake of all dogs reading this.

No, the dogs never get a bone of any kind. I worry about splinters of bond doing internal damage. They would love them but it is better safe than sorry. Thanks for pointing it out for everyone to thing about this.

No, the dogs will not get it, I do get all the meat off as well. I did get a second ham for the freezer at .97lb . Wish I still had the big standing freezer!!

Yes, That's a lot of food for one person.
Wish I could help you but I hardly ever eat Pork.
(Don't know why!) I love beef though! Use that a lot!
I finally found a store around here that sells only USDA CHOICE BEEF!

I enjoy pork but I have lots of beef, chicken and seafood in my freezer. Always good to have options, most of which is purchased on sale. Chicken breasts 1.47lb, jumbo shrimp 6.00lb, NY strip 4.77 lb etc.

My son is always happy when he needs a little extra when things are tight.

Why restrict yourself to a small amount of bean soup?

Google
ham bone broth uses

Aside from the variety of what you can make for future meals wasting any food just never seemed right to me.

It makes me feel better, all these answers about this rather silly question. I still get overwhelmed with making decisions these days. Thanks Everyone!
