Music Production

Hi Folks;
When I turned 65, a little over a year ago, I decided to take up electronic music production. That is not the most popular hobby for someone my age. So it is no surprise that I don't have any friends or family who cares to listen to my songs. So, that is the main reason I came here, to share my music. If you want, you can look me up; Den Warren on YouTube to hear it. I'd love it if you'd leave comments on my songs or come back here to discuss. I'd even help train someone who wants to try the same thing.
But I also decided I needed a place to hang out in general, as I have a lot to offer in so many areas. So, here I am, I just signed up minutes ago. I'll pop in from time to time.

Hi Den, went to your Youtube channel, and some really good stuff there, well done! have always been a fan of electronic music, have many albums by (Two clips of my favorites below) keep up the good work!

Wow. You are a master of the ambient stuff. Nice rich tones. Tangerine Dreams is right up my alley, mate. I'm thinking I heard that before somewhere. Cool video too. You are what I consider to be a real musician.

Back again Den, what got me inspired to listening to electronic music was way back in 1970 when first heard the album Switched on Bach(Still got it)

Welcome to our group, @Den Warren! Loved listening to your music! I've played classical music in the past (violin, viola) but more recently have tried composing music, among other things. The important thing is to keep active and do what you love.

Thank you for your comments, palisades. I appreciate the encouragement. What you said about staying active is important. I should probably never quit totally.

Welcome Den. It's never too late to follow your passion. Age doesn't matter. Creativity is what matters. I listened to a couple of songs and noticed two distinctly different genres. I like when an artist can do that well. Keep creating. I wasn't crazy about digital production because I felt it took my musicality away...sitting in front of a screen rather than at the instrument. But I did produce one song completely digitally using the Logic program several years ago, before it died. I had also edited and added more tracks to the songs I produced on my Clavinova (digital piano) and luckily "bounced" them into iTunes before Logic crashed. They are also still on floppy disks used in the instrument.

I had taken Logic classes at the Apple store for more than a year to learn about the program. My son now uses Logic and is encouraging me to do more digitally. He constantly watches YouTube videos about music production in the program to increase his expertise. I told him I won't invest in Logic again but I am working in Garage Band on a "killer" track right now. Loving what I've been able to do with it, so I'm warming up to the possibilities of working that way again. Tracks for my next CD are being edited in Logic by my son, who is also my studio engineer. I see you are a CD Baby member and they posted your songs. Same here. Best of blessings with all your creative endeavors.

Nice report Diva. Thank you for your comment on the genres. I know my music bounces all over the place. I figured that was a bad thing since I have trouble collecting steady listeners. Another reason for low interest is because people don't consider electronic music to be real music, especially with the older folks who I mostly associate with. But the line between computer and physical is getting fuzzier all the time.
I did not know I was on CD Baby and that they posted my songs. I never heard of it before. I'll check it out and look for your music there. Do you have songs posted anywhere?
I have a website with a blog. Here is a link to how I make my music. https://rwregularguy.wixsite.com/den-warren/post/the-secrets-of-how-i-produce-my-music. I talk about a lot of other related stuff on other pages there.

Thank you so much for the comment, palisades.
It is great that you have some music theory as you compose. What methods do you use to compose?
Here is a link to my website and a blog on my composing: https://rwregularguy.wixsite.com/den-warren/post/the-secrets-of-how-i-produce-my-music. Let me know if you finish something and post it somewhere. I'd like to check it out. Here is a track that came out a couple of days ago:

Thank you, @Den Warren! for sharing your music! I am like you, pushing the boundaries and learning new things at this age!
I noticed three themes in this Turning Point song, and my favorite section was around the 1:11 mark. That spoke to me. Quite lovely. Will have a look at your other songs when I have time. Thanks!

I am self-taught on the piano, although I played classical music growing up. I've used noteflight.com in the past ten years or so for several songs. They provide the instruments and there's a free basic plan. I started with that, then upgraded so I could write more music. What I liked about them was the endless possibility of different sounds, beats, etc. And I didn't have to worry about making mistakes. I could always listen then go back and clean it up until I felt it was ready. You really don't need to know music, just have a good ear and everything somehow comes together. They also have a way where you can save your music on sheets and download (sheet music) to your laptop.
Here's an example of one of my songs (I made it into a video). It was after my husband died, so it was a particularly therapeutic experience for me: Wishing You Were Here With Me On Christmas Day

I've also played on a synthesizer and captured the music via recording by my Canon camera. I took some flowers I had and made a movie with the music from my synthesizer.

A Gift of Flowers with Music

Enjoy!

Thank you for the comment on my music palides. Yes, I am like you. I want to still be productive and creative.
From what you have said so far and after a visit to your site with your beautiful music, I suspect you may not like much of my discography. But I hope you will like some of it. Maybe this one?
Anyway I wrote some more thoughts on your contact page.
That is great how you are self-taught on the piano. I don't know anything about noteflight, but it does sound something on the order of what I do, but maybe more work.
Sorry about your husband. I pray you are getting along OK right now. I really don't want to imagine life right now without my wife.
Take Care,
Den

Thanks, @Den Warren, for sharing your music and your thoughts. Nice video! It flowed well and was relaxing to listen to. Glad you also liked my music. Due to time constraints (got a new job), I don't have the luxury of time to sit down and compose like I used to. Good luck with your music endeavors!

Thank you. That you don't know about CD Baby is puzzling because an artist has to sign up, then submit his/ her or their works for CD Baby to have access. Then we must authorize digital distribution such as via YouTube, Apple Music, etc. Could someone have done that for you? That would be a nice surprise because it would mean someone was paying attention to your music. But it also means that someone would have had to have access to your music in the required format (I think it's MP3s for CD Baby). I will message you the links to my website and music on YouTube.

I don't agree that people think electronic music is not real music. Maybe the ones you know and some others but there's a big market for it. My supervisor had given me the album Seven Deadly Sins, with Lust on it. That was in 1977 and it remains one of my all time favorite songs and an inspiration for me to create in the New Age/Funk fusion genre. Also I remember when Numbers came out. The deejay said...just give it a chance (or words to that affect). The song became a big hit here in the states. It did grow on me. :D Kraftwerk is a German band.
