Why do living things need to kill and eat other living things to keep on living?

If you live and enjoy a vegetarian lifestyle, great but this thread isn’t
directed towards you. Creatures eating other creatures is a system
that works, no doubt about that but it does seem a bit harsh at times,
when I’ve nothing better to do than to consider idle things. What do
you think? Big fish eats the little fish. Lions eat lambs. People eat
everything. Was this a purposeful plan or does it even bear considering?

Of course it's a purposeful plan. Predators vs Veggie eaters. The predators are designed to be slower but deadly. It's population control. You can see it by examining teeth. It's the way it is. Humans have the choice to break the pattern through thought, but it is natural for us to be meat as well as veg eaters.

Personally I think those who see nothing wrong with eating other creatures are barbaric. (other) animals eat flesh because for them it is natural. Humans, however, are thinking, reasoning animals and are well aware of what they are doing. Those who choose not to eat animals are more civilised. This may well show itself in other areas of their lives.

Hahaha..that's quite funny.. the people I know who are Vegetarians and Vegans can hardly be thought of as civilized...

The Enormous horned South American Frogs ("pac man") eat only live prey and anything that fits their enormous mouths.

So, Certophylis Ornata dines on amphibians, insects, small rodents, birds (!) and other frogs including the own speciies and even their own offspring.
Welcome to life...this is NATURAL! Its a frog eats frog world!

Ribbit...

Just imagine how many rats n mice and other such would out-breed and overrun the world if this were not the way of things. I am ever thankful for cats and terriers with their hunting.
8 billion, or so, people feeding and breeding in the world.
Maybe it’s time to consider cannibalism or revive
human sacrifices again to get things under control?
Not a suggestion, just a thought. It once was natural.

My snowdrops don't kill other things and eat them

I think that I think, so I think I'll go and make myself a bacon sandwich... 😊

No, cannibalism was never natural. It is done for human religious type reasoning; or desperation like the Donner Party. Other animals are not cannibals. The same goes for human sacrifice, a totally made up human thing for human rationale.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there are several animals who will eat their own species, rats and pigs being at the top of the list. Even dogs and cats will eat their young under stress.

From a "natural" standpoint humans are omnivores. Being vegan or vegetarian is what's unnatural. Having said that I completely understand the motivations (ecological, ethical and dietary) for being vegan or vegetarian. I applaud those who are. I just don't have the discipline or moral stamina to stick to that regime.

Plus an occasional cheeseburger brings me great joy.

But humans aren’t the only species that kills for food
and some animals eat only vegetation and not living
organisms. There’s a lot of life on the planet we share.

Well sure. Some animals are carnivores, some herbivores, and some are omnivorous like us. Chimpanzees, bears, raccoons are all omnivores.

And my late dog Cody would eat anything if you left it out on the counter where he could jump up to it. Including a whole pumpkin pie.
