So many people dying before reaching "Average Life Expectancy"

"Mean life expectancy = 50 % live longer and 50% of pop die before that mean life age.
I don't know, my mother in law used to say most people are above average... LOL

Like Lake Wobegon, where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.

The covid-19 epidemic brought down the average life expectancy a bit. Poverty is a big killer. It seems like we have more destitute people these days, judging from all the homeless people living in tents on the streets around town. And then there's the opioid crisis which kills a lot of people along with meth.

So it's not surprising that the average life expectancy in the U.S. would have decreased.

How come I am still here?
Seems like I am entering to "At Risk" range - 60 to 70

Life expectancy is falling in the US, 79 for women, 73 for men.
It is rising in Australia. 84 for women, 81 for men.
UK, 83 for women, 79 for males
Canada, 84 for women, 80 for men
It won't help your longevity to worry about life expectancy. Life healthy, be careful so that you can get the most out of your coming years.

Senior Ben: you forgot "FAT." Go to any "All You Can Eat Buffets" in any country and look around you. Fat is killing millions of people in the first world. Some joker tried to say, "Fat is Beautiful." He must have been kidding!

Our medical system is also not the best in the world. Too many doctors here are pushing pharmaceuticals when they could be doing better than that (lifestyle changes, preventive medicine). Pharmaceuticals may seem to help, but they have so many side effects. I've seen this with elderly relatives who were popping so many pills because their doctors told them to. Also, doctors are pushing opioids (I have witnessed this) and it's disgusting. Too many agendas and the patient gets lost in the shuffle. Instead of focusing on the side effects of the medicines, the doctors push more and more drugs on people to offset the side effects. I have become very skeptical of doctors. I consider this a "healthy" skepticism, excuse the pun.

I've become a bit skeptical of doctors as of late, also. I was in the hospital a few years ago with facial cellulitis and they asked me if I wanted an opioid for the pain. I wasn't in any pain. My head was all swollen and weird looking, but there was no pain. That didn't seem to matter to them.

Once again, money is all that matters. Drug manufacturers profit from people taking opioids so doctors push them on patients.

Not to heap more on obese people, but when the Golden Corral opened up here, I was thrilled, but then saw patrons at different times, some I'd seen there many times and I never knew so many 400+ lb people lived here.

When my late wife was given an opioid prescription upon being diagnosed with terminal cancer, her immediate reaction was "I'm not taking that 'expletive deleted'"...and she never did.

TOO many young people are dying! It's almost bizarre. My late DIL and Son lost about 11 of their friends between 2020 and 2021. Most of them died from heart disease or cancer. A couple of them I didn't know, so don't know the causes. My DIL used to post about their passings that saddened her so much. Little did she know she'd be on that list ! I do check the obituaries and not only are people in my son's age range dying (mid 50's), people in my Millennials are dying too. I know some of them were due to gunshot wounds but some were also due to illnesses. It seems I see just as many Gen-X and Millennials in the obits as older people. It's just so, so sad.

I have come to the realization that doctor's motives are not as pure as they once seemed to be. I watched my father start a drug, have to take another drug to counteract the ill effects of the first drug, repeat..........

I am not sure if it is because I am now on Medicare, because I moved to a rural area or just the changing nature of health care in general but it sure "ain't what it used to be". My doctor does not communicate, does not follow up, seldom offers a diagnosis and openly express the belief that he is not making the money he wants. Unfortunately there is not much in the way of medical professionals to choose from in this area. They seem to congregate in areas where the money is.

This week 60 Minutes had a piece on obesity Recognizing and treating obesity as a disease. I though it was OK but disagree on calling it a disease. I think this line of reasoning does society a disservice because the problem is much larger than the article describes. Yes, the problem ends up as a disease but it’s because of what our society has evolved into. We have avoided discussing the original sin and worse our ways are being sowed unto the rest of the world.

Our genetics are being modified by environmental factors, mechanized farming practices, pesticides, GMO foods, processed foods, food preparation methods, and advertisements promoting all these things. These effects plus our new found sedentary life style have all combined to produce children that struggle with obesity & diabetes.

So yes, it is a disease now but of our own doing, at least in my opinion. Now big pharma comes along & and has a new very expensive drug to correct the problem. Why not address the issues that are causing the problems? I think calling it a disease to make people who are suffering feel better is wrong. They have their problems because of what their parents (unknowingly) & industry have done.

There is another good piece on PBS NOVA The Truth about Fat. Again, they seem to ignore the environmental factors but do point out how some totally off-the-grid cultures such as the Hadza community in Tanzania have no problems such as ours.

Just my thought on the subject!

Additionally, another problem with calling it (or anything else) a 'disease' is it won't be long before it's categorized as a 'disability'.. thus, opening people up to a lifetime of government/other 'benefits,' no requirement or even encouragement to take any action to deal with it, and probably die much younger than they normally would.

I don't believe drug addiction or alcoholism is a disease either. These are addictions. Food can be an addiction also.

My crazed raging, child abusing mother lived longer than I ever will. With the stress I've endured since childhood, I wonder why I'm still alive. No child should elicit the fight or flight response over and over and over...

I might have already passed away during the last decade were it not for modern antibiotics that knocked out the diverticulitis that in prior generations killed many seniors. And just last year given a polycythemia vera diagnosis, would have likely been on a path to my end just as happened to my mother were it not for modern medical science advances in recent years.

Life expectancy seems to drop every year lately in the US .... so many people younger than myself dying every week it seems.

The authorities will be proclaiming that it's not just 'a disability', but that it's also YOUR* fault!!

(*'YOUR' being anyone other than person in question.)
I'm not 100% sure what you mean, but you're probably correct.

It's like too many people don't take any responsibility for what they do or the consequences.
