Have any of you heard Walmart is banning plastic bags Jan 17th nation wide? I was watching a video on you tube and saw it there. I had already heard they were testing it in certain locations but I had not heard nation wide.

Yes, they were discontinued here as of January 1st. Here it’s not just Walmart but all large stores statewide. So far, so good although quite a few people have been upset over it.

The stores can use what they have on hand but must charge a dime each for them.

I’ve never been to Aldi’s but Walmart is selling reusable bags. I understand they are a reasonable price but I already had some cloth bags that are perfect for groceries. They were just taking up space in the closet so I’m all set. I hope it goes well for you. 😊

Food safety folks have studied food borne illness carried by reusable grocery bags. They are great if you wash and dry them properly. Too often they are contaminated by meat or produce and if they are not laundered they can contaminate your food and cause some nasty sickness. I'm not a fan of all the plastic bags we throw into our landfills. But, people have to be smart about reusable bags.

I remember years ago in the news it said Kroger was going to stop using plastic bags, so I bought reusable bags and I hoarded so many (SO MANY!) of the plastic bags, but then Kroger didn't stop using plastic (at least not in Nebraska) and when I moved I threw away my hoard.

I guess I should be hoarding again, because I like the little bags for cleaning out the kitty litter box. But I suppose I could adjust to using a little paper bag or something.

I buy kitchen catchers, but grocery bags are actually better for my garbage needs. I always get one or two when I shop.

One store has stopped using them. Maybe the other store will sell me a couple hundred. Just in case.

Yes. Here in Jersey not only Walmart but all stores are prohibited from using single use plastic bags and single use paper bags. So I've gotten used to bringing my own reusable, washable bags. But I got an unplanned lunch from Wawa the other day and did not have a bag with me so I'm glad the container fit in my purse. I wasn't going to ask my son to run back out to the car for a bag for such a small item (he keeps large, reusable ones in the car). On the way back home we went to Dollar Tree and that's when a bag came in handy. This reminds me; we have a whole lot of plastic bags from when my son was sellijg health products. I should stick one in each of my purses.

Yes, it’s all chain stores here too. I got all geared up for groceries but forgot about chain restaurants. I ordered takeout from a restaurant and got surprised when they asked for a dime for the bag they put it in. I had left my purse in the car and they were nice and said I could pay twice next time. It will be the same fee at Penney’s or Home Depot so I need to put more reusable bags in the car that aren’t for groceries. For now they have plastic bags to buy but I believe that goes away and they will have no bags at all after awhile.

I will be buying bags that I will use only once for cat litter and small trash cans instead of reusing grocery bags. It doesn’t make sense.

I got my groceries bagged in plastic bags yesterday at Walmart but was informed by the cashier that soon those bags will be discontinued. Was told one must bring their own bags, boxes or reload the items back in your cart to take out to your vehicle.

That's fine with me. Some of the stuff I bought, the cashier used 3 bags to pack heavy items. When I get to my vehicle, I remove all those plastic bags, repack stuff in banana boxes that I have in the rear of my vehicle and leave those plastic bags in the cart for them to dispose of.

My local Walmart are not using plastic bags which means that they will not bag for you with your own bags even if they are
the new Walmart bags.

Fortunately I had some of my own bags with me but being a little disabled what with one thing and another I was having a hard time getting it done thereby holding up the next customer. It was a big shop and I spent close to 90 bucks. Finally the cashier helped me for which I was grateful. So.... guess I won't be doing a 'big' shop there anymore.

What happens if somebody buys a large item? Too large for a reusable grocery bag.?
They put a sticker on that indicates that it has been paid for.

We’re expected to keep our receipts out so they can be reviewed, if they want.

Walmart here gave up plastic bags a year ago. They gave us lots of warnings. I always carry my own bags for packing so it wasn’t a big transition. They sure sold a lot of their recyclable bags in the beginning. All stores will be going this way soon.

If we do a pickup order, things are delivered in their plastic crates and then they set them in our bags or boxes.

I don’t have a very big purse but keep a folded up plastic bag secured with an elastic band at the bottom. I’ve had to use it sometimes.

Their plastic bags were always flimsy - I would double or triple them. I don’t shop there anymore after we had a fraudulent charge for their premier W+ service on our card, which we had to cancel and get a new number. Since then, my cards (all of them) have been denied at Walmart self service, but then a service person magically gets them to work. I don’t trust them. Also, their prices have gone up way beyond inflation (and other stores) and their shelves are often empty. Throw in a few very bad experiences, although to be fair this is common with all big box stores that pay low and have high employee turnover.
