Owls, owls, lots of owls.....

We've always had owls in the conservation area behind our house and I love to listen to their hooting at night. The past few days they have been particularly "talky". More vocal than I've ever heard before. They're even in the trees in our front yard and across the street.

I'm wondering what has made them so vocal. Is it mating season? I read that mating season begins in February normally, but maybe something is different this year.

I'm not complaining, just curious.

I've found that seasons vary
Seems ours mate around late fall
Their hoots are often territorial
Maybe they're protecting hatchlings?
