Would you ever consider going back to work?

I retired at 58 and 7 months later was teaching an online college class which I did for 8 years. I was my own boss and I was left alone. I also did consulting in my previous career and still do case management and vocational testing.

I set my own schedule and do the paperwork at home. I wouldn’t return to any employment where somebody had any type of control over me.

Not within the hardware electronic engineering support of my tech career. Although one of only modest economic means (can't even buy a home), am not now and over decades have not been much motivated by wealth or possessions but rather adventure, experiences, knowledge. Never again endless 8-5 m-f drudgery. As a fragile someone with a serious 5 decade medical issue, have wisely spent an adult life semi hidden from our society and culture. When large sized 8k pc monitors finally become available, (late 2023?) will move into the public realm exhibiting large images. In any case, not interested in ever doing more than advising for whatever because the rest of my life is too short and am enjoying and content enough as it is.

No frigging way! I worked consistently for 35 years. The first 21 years I was a communications manager for a major life insurance company. I dealt with constant deadlines and so much stress and pressure that I came very close to having a mental breakdown and had to quit. I operated my own business for the next 14 years before retiring. I paid my dues. I have zero desire to answer to anyone (i.e. have a boss) ever again, either in a paid job or in a volunteer position.

I'll go back when hell freezes over. Not one minute sooner.

Would you ever consider going back to work?

I did.....once

Then

Laughed......and laughed
Getting up, hurrying around to get to work is not something I would want to do again. Nor would I want to have to deal with people or having to be talking on a telephone. Actually I am happy being retired and having my time being my own.

Good for you "Youngster." I heard that hell is not going to freeze over anytime soon so I'm pretty sure that you'll be safe. Me too! Not a "Snowball's chance in a very hot place" will ever see me going back to work! No "Work Slavery" for me!
So many negative answers and a lot more besides, makes me a majority of one. But I have to ask the question, if work was so much a place of despise, why did so many of you stick with it? A change is good as a rest as the saying goes, why stay where you were unhappy?

I can answer that. There are many reasons why someone would stick with a job they didn't like.
The money is good.
The benefits are good.
Too old to find another job. ( believe it or not age discrimination is still an issue)
Don't want to start over.
Too young to retire (but too old to find another job)
I don't know how to do anything else.
Fear of failure
Etc.

Curious about this part:

believe it or not age discrimination is still an issue
I don't see this as ever likely to change, do you? If you think about it, you'll see why...

In the UK age discrimination has become a role reversal. The baby boomers didn't reproduce in the same numbers so now the population is shrinking. Britain leaving the EU, known as Brexit has meant that many who came here have gone home. Add on the diminishing numbers that the pandemic has caused and suddenly, retirees are worth keeping, and by that I mean, have some shekels, have some more shekels. A grand a week has become common place for many a would be retiree. Add on their personal and state pension and you begin to understand why the former age related retiree is still working.

What you've described is a labor shortage anomaly, a shortage will never require anti-discrimination laws because the demand will absorb *everyone*.

But when there's a labor shortage--even a little one--it makes sense to hire a younger potentially more energetic worker to replace older workers who cost more and whose health coverage costs more.

I thoroughly enjoyed my job
It really wasn't a 'job'
I couldn't wait to get to work

But, for me, the mountains called
I didn't let that phone ring more than once

Time to build some cabins (my childhood dream)

Working with my hands was shear play

and, as I learned from other cabin builders, once the floor was done
a happy dance was required

yes all play

and I've always played hard
