1879 – The Battle of Isandlwana
during the Anglo-Zulu War resulting in a British defeat.

1879 – Start of the The Battle of Rorke's Drift, also during the Anglo-Zulu War and just some 15 km away from Isandlwana, resulting in a British victory. Eleven 'Victoria Crosses' were awarded to the defenders of Rorke's Drift, along with a number of other decorations & honours. 32 killed or injured on the British side. Around 850 killed or injured on the Zulu side. I’ve forgotten how many times I’ve watched the movie about this event. Zulu, staring Stanley Baker & Michael Caine.

1901 – Edward VII is proclaimed King
of the United Kingdom after the death of his mother, Queen Victoria.

1915 – Over 600 people are killed in Guadalajara, Mexico, when a train plunges off the tracks into a deep canyon.

1917 – President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, called upon the warring European nations (WW1) to end the war. He called for, “peace without victory.”

1941 – World War II: British and Commonwealth troops capture Tobruk from Italian forces during Operation Compass.
