Internalizing Your "Senior" Status

I don't feel like a senior citizen but chronologically they tell me that I am. They can bite me. :)

My girlfriend is always saying, "We're old". I finally told her to STFU, I don't need to constantly be reminded of my age. I know how "old" I am. Sheesh, give it a rest.

Haha! I was just outside repairing my electrical and cutting lumber on my table saw.
The thought crossed my mind, "I should hire some man to do this for me.
I'm way too old to do this. I'm a little ole lady!"
My next thought was: "What am I thinking? OF COURSE I can do this!"
I do all my own repairs, except climbing on the roof.
Chronological age is a crock!

Yeah...I consider myself a senior citizen body-wise anyways as I can't really run anymore or jump and without real strength in my arms - I can't climb. I just found out today that I have tendonitis in both left and right shoulder. I have already begun physiotherapy.
I hope the treatments will help with the tendonitis, @IrisSenior !

I'm near 70 and I am very healthy but I don't wear makeup as I have blepharitis and I decided not to colour my hair anymore. I love it that the younger people just jump up and offer me a seat on the bus or train. Sometimes, I'm getting off at the next stop and I tell them, no, it's ok, just one stop. They keep arguing with me to sit down, I guess I must look like I'm way over the hill.:D

Even though I don't "feel" like a senior and I certainly don't act old, I sometimes have to remind myself that I am a senior citizen. I guess the realization hit me after I stopped being "carded" (to prove my age) when asking for senior discounts. That was about 3 years ago when I was 73.

@CallMeKate Your reply reminded me...I need to see if grocery stores in our area offer 10% discounts on certain days.

There's nothing wrong with being a senior. It's just not how I identify myself myself. Aches and pains and reading glasses aside. I'm a boomer and do not feel officially "OLD" just yet. Now if senior meant something positive in Western culture like a sage, I would say, "Okay, I can see that."

I shall soon be 75 and I still haven't got used to the way people treat me. They seem to think that all older women are senile old biddies. I married young and had children, so have been a busy wife and mother for a long time. Now I'm free to enjoy my time instead of spending it looking after others.
I'm not ready to be old yet!

I believe Weis Markets has locations in your state, @OneEyedDiva ... if so, they have the 10% senior discount on Tuesdays. It's only participating locations, and it's definitely not every item in the store... but when I see the "sr dsct savings" on the receipt for those items, it feels like a teeny tiny win over inflation. My brain still works fine, I can come back with a response,
very quickly.

The body though is quite a lot slower, it still functions but
gets achy after a while.

According to logical thinking, the body should never look
or feel old, ever, because the cells are constantly being renewed,
all parts should only be a few months old, the bones are the
oldest.

To maintain youthful looks and feelings of health we must need
to live differently, to get the body to produce stem cells every time.

Enough said, I am still active, both physically and mentally, in my
82nd year.

Mike.

Don’t think we’ve crossed paths before but I’m also fairly new here, a very happy retiree and “about to turn 70”. Pretty sure I’ll beat you to septuagenarian status though, unless you’re closer than three weeks.

I can’t even imagine anyone younger jumping up to offer me their seat. Frankly I think in the USA there is a lot of resentment of people my age and I don’t altogether blame them. We aren’t exactly a rarity and I think they have a much harder road ahead than most of us had to look forward to at their age. They see us as dragons guarding our gold, taking much but contributing little.

I’ve always had the conviction that everyone is the same inside regardless of age. When I was a kid I thought obviously older people had the same hopes and insecurities, the big difference being they had been my age while I had not yet been theirs. I don’t worship youth or try to look or act younger than I am. But neither do I approach being senior as something limited, known and forlorn. Being older is the only new perspective I have left to explore. I refuse to see it as bleak.

Well said, @MarkD

My days are filled with.....
"I can do this...."
and
"How much longer can I do this?"

Some days I even think “should I be doing this” and “what the hell am I doing” but even more frequently “what did I come in here for”? I think it is good to be able laugh at ourselves. Not sure if I’m especially gifted that way or just above average laughable.

I think "should I be doing this" is a whole lot better than "why didn't I try to do that while I was able?" As for the "what did I come in here for?"... I'm using my right to plead the fifth on that one. 🤭 @MarkD

In today's society, different generations mix much more freely than have done previously, so age is more a state of mind.
So, I will go on dressing like granddad did..............................................if you don't mind.

Sometimes I get a little sad that I look much younger than may age, because sometimes I need to sit down somewhere maybe on a train or something due to a back pain..or knee pain.... and no-one gets up to let me have a seat... . They'll get up and give someone else a seat who is my age but looks older, but I'm never offered one...

Understood, @hollydolly I'm blessed (or cursed??) with that, too... mostly it's when senior tickets or discounts are involved. I'm usually told "sorry, ma'am, you need to be 60 (or 65) to use this discount." So I have to pull out the license. But it's not really annoying... hope it stays that way for at least ten years yet! :)
