Does Using a Brush with Spray Paint Work?

I have a small container that I want to paint with paint that only comes in a spray can. (It's a fancy "hammered" look kind of paint.) There's a metal band on the bottom of the container that I don't want to paint over and I could cover with masking/painter's tape but since I've had nothing but bad luck with masking tape (bleed through), I was thinking it'd go better if I could paint the container with a small brush, maybe spray some of the paint into a disposable container and then dip my brush in it? Has anyone had luck doing this?

Thanks, I think you all are right. And luckily, Huzz managed to remove that bottom metal band, so I'll be able to spray paint the container and hopefully it'll turn out the best.
