Norfolk Southern Train Derails in East Palestine Ohio

The train was carrying vinyl chloride, which is a serious carcinogen. I remember being called to an upholstery shop that was on fire early one morning. The sun hadn’t come up yet and I could see the flames over 2 miles away. When I got to the scene, the fire departments were just arriving and already hooking up their hoses to the tanker snd the hydrants.

After about 15 minutes, I was told that if I didn’t have a respirator, I needed to leave and that a HazMat team was enroute because there was vinyl chloride inside. I asked if we knew how much and was told at least 3-55 gallon drums. As I was going back to my SUV, the HazMat team rolled in and the Chief or whatever his title is handed me a respirator. I told them I didn’t need it because I was leaving. I wasn’t needed there.

Luckily, the shop was kind of out away from the small town, so there was no need to evacuate.

The contamination has been spreading from fallout onto the ground and into nearby lakes and rivers. the Ohio River is a large tributary of the Mississippi River, so this is going to affect the water all of the way down to the ocean before much longer.
There are reports from people saying that their pets have died, livestock and chickens are dying, fish are dead in the water, and the air for miles is polluted. There are pictures posted that someone took from a commercial airliner, and you can see the enormous black cloud over the whole area.

An interesting tidbit of information about this derailment is that Netflix has just released the movie “White Noise”, which is about a train derailment that happens in Palestine, just like this one did, and the people who live in the town were extras in the movie, and now are living through the same destruction in real life.

Here is a map showing where water is affected, and going to be affected as the Ohio River flows into the Mississippi River.

When I was 9 years old, I grew up just outside of Cambridge, Ohio, which is about 2 hours from East Palestine. I have a boyhood friend that married and moved there. We speak on the phone and e-mail at least once or twice a month. He told me the day after this accident, he took his wife and went to stay at his wife’s parents home in South Carolina. He’s not going back home until the EPA declares the air pure again. Their 2 kids live out of state, so they are ok.

From what I have been reading, this is still a very dangerous situation to humans and animals. Some residents are claiming that their pets have been killed by the gases that have escaped from the fumes.

Yes, it sounds very scary there. Farm animals are dying and people are feeling ill. I read that there will be a meeting tonight for residents with chemical experts there to answer questions.

Kind of reminds me of the movie “The China Syndrome” and then 3 Mile Island had their accident.

Just heard on news, area residents had to sign
Some sorta agreement.. but didn't get details.

Anybody know about that?.

We've had a couple of major train derailments here in Canada over the years which involved evacuating local population but they have usually involved petroleum products that have caused explosions & huge fireballs.

This situation with the chemicals sounds like it will be a lot worse and the effects felt longer term for residents, their animals & wildlife in general. Sad ... very sad :(

Btw, a truck spilled nitric acid on I-10 near Tucson yesterday. There was an evacuation of people there too. This would be much smaller than Ohio but still a problem.
I was just about to mention that.

Shelter-in-place order reinstated following hazardous spill on I-10 in Tucson

The Arizona Department of Public Safety has reinstated a shelter-in-place order for a one-mile perimeter around a crash involving a commercial tractor truck hauling liquid nitric acid which resulted in a hazardous spill along Interstate 10 in Tucson.

The crash led to evacuation orders which were lifted Tuesday night, but reinstated Wednesday morning, authorities said.

“While crews were attempting to remove the load from the commercial vehicle, gassing occurred,” DPS said in a news release.

Interstate 10 remains closed in both directions between Kolb and Rita roads in Tucson, according to DPS.

“Unified Command advises anyone within the one-mile perimeter to turn off heaters and/or air conditioning systems that bring in outside air,” the news release said. “The public should avoid the area and motorists should seek an alternate route.”

DPS did not indicate when the shelter-in-place would be lifted.

The driver of the truck died in the crash, the department said, without identifying the person publicly.

Shawn Bilkey said the orange-colored gas that came from an overturned tractor-trailer carrying liquid nitric acid smelled like smoke, “but not fire smoke … just not pleasant.”

Bilkey was driving east along I-10 Tuesday near the Rita Road exit, shortly after the truck overturned.

“The traffic never stopped while we were there, it had to have just happened because there was only one cop there at the time,” he said.

He remembered traffic in front of him suddenly slowed, and then he began seeing the orange-colored gas in front of him.

“It was a color I’d never seen in vapor form before, so I decided to start recording,” he said. “Just in case Tucson were to turn into East Palestine y’know?”

In the video, a thick plume of gas is seen emanating from the overturned tractor trailer. It’s seen drifting northward, into and across the westbound Interstate 10 lanes.

“It didn’t smell like anything when we drove by, probably helped that the wind was taking it in the opposite direction,” Bilkey said. “But I was dropping off my friend who lives in Rita Ranch about half a mile north from where the spill was, in the direction the wind was blowing, and when he got out of the car it almost smelled like smoke but not fire smoke it’s hard to explain, just not pleasant.”

Nitric acid is a colorless liquid, has yellow or red fumes and acrid odor, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Exposure to it can cause irritation to the eyes, skin and mucous membranes.
