Another "object" shot down

Would have been kind of nice if they could have confirmed what it WAS and where it was from before scrambling to get the headline out. EDIT: I just read more about it... they have no idea what it was or who owns it. Something smells foul about the timing of the whole thing but we'll see.

Since news broke last week about the Chinese balloon that was floating over US airspace, new details have emerged about what’s now understood to be a global surveillance operation by China’s military, the People’s Liberation Army.

On Thursday, officials revealed that they believe the spy balloons the US has discovered are part of a large fleet that is conducting surveillance operations globally. The US has traced the balloons to 40 countries across five continents.

The US has developed a method to track China’s spy balloon fleet within the last year, CNN reported exclusively on Friday.

I heard a blurb on the news that it was shot down for safety reasons, since it was at the altitude that passenger planes fly. Would be a shame if that object hit into a plane and killed all aboard. I think they did what was needed. Haven't seen a full report yet, been busy all day.

now why would a country need to observe another country thousands of miles away?
For the same reason that the USA has been doing the same exact same thing, since the 1950's. Don't you remember the name Gary Powers, the pilot of a American U2 spy aircraft that was shot down over Russia back then ? Tit for tat. JimB.

But now we (and other countries) have satellites that can read the text in a golf ball from space.

What advantage is a balloon?
