The topic of Milk, anything about it...

My vegan son has told me how sad it is for the dairy cows to have their calves taken away so they can keep giving milk and how they stand in their stalls being milked by machines their entire lives.đŸ˜„
It would be nice if people were willing to pay higher prices for milk from 'high welfare' dairy farms. I think they only get milked a few times a day, so probably they stand there eating alternating with laying down resting and chewing cuds. Probably takes a lot of calories to produce all the milk. So maybe not a terribly sad life, but presumably could be better.

I stopped drinking cows milk decades ago after reading about how it's produced. Afterward I went to soy milk then changed to almond milk. When and how much I drink depends on what I'm eating. Just had milk with a peanut butter and jam sandwich as a snack. I'll have it with cookies and sometimes cake (which is not in the house often). I eat yogurt daily so I don't feel the need to drink milk daily.

I love milk and drink it with anything sweet, cookies, chocolate, pancakes, cereal, and in my coffee, 😍

but I'm always trying to give it up.

Well, it's much worse than that. The calves are taken away so they can become veal. And the calves are fed a low iron diet to produce the most desired white meat. They are fed milk replacer with antibiotics to control the diarrhea that is caused by an inadequate diet. They are also kept tied up until slaughter to prevent movement to avoid muscle development to keep their meat tender.

It's been said that if slaughterhouse walls were made of glass most people would become vegetarians.

If large dairy farm operations were likewise transparent, we'd probably all consume far less milk, yogurt and other milk products.

I combine almond with oat milk to create a coffee creamer, and use almond milk for cereal, baking and cooking.

I have some lactose intolerance, but mostly steer away from dairy milk because plant-based milks are fine and have no saturated fat or cholesterol.

Last but certainly not least, animals with the unfortunate fate of being in large livestock and dairy farms, are generally treated abominably.
I too prefer plant-based milk, namely almond or coconut milk. I've experimented with baking with both refrigerated and canned coconut milk and have had mixed results- still tweaking.

Do you notice coconut milk adding a noticeable coconut flavor to your foods? I find almond milk has a neutral taste. I don't love the flavor of oat milk but am ok with it mixed 1/3 oat milk to 2/3 almond milk for coffee creamer and other dishes where some creaminess is called for.

After opening a carton of (Costco shelf stable) oat milk I freeze it in 1 cup portions. Fresh almond milk (Aldi) is always in my fridge.

My Mum once told me that she almost needed a crowbar to get me off her nipples, I was like a limpet.
All my life I wondered why ladies had two milk reservoirs, then logic clicked in, the answer I came up with was, when one tank was empty, the baby just used the udder one. 😊

Yes, both the refrigerated and the canned versions have a mild coconut taste- so it works well with sweet dishes such as pancakes, french toast and bread pudding.

I have always used either milk or cream in my coffee, but now i just read that the milk ruins the polyphenols that are so healthy for us, that are in both coffee and tea. I have tried coconut milk before, and it is okay but has the coconut taste, and neither soy or almond milk seem to do a good job unless you use a lot of it in the coffee.
I don’t care for black coffee, but I DO want to get those healthy polyphenols; so this morning, i have been researching other options.
I am going to order some Orgain plant-based protein powder in vanilla, and see how that does in my coffee. It comes with all sorts of “superfoods” added into it, so that is a good thing also.
I have some that I have had for a while that is the Kroger brand “Simple Truth”, and it is chocolate. I tried that , and it works fine when I want a mocha flavor, since it has the cocoa in it.
I think that the vanilla will do better for just regular tasting coffee. Has anyone else tried using protein powder to lighten their coffee or tea ?

I'm vitamin D milk type. I drink it all the time and use it in other dishes. I tried a few of those trendy or healthy substitutes. Not for me.

I mix 1/4 oatmilk, 1/4 soymilk and 1/2 almond milk. Keep a few days worth in the fridge and freeze the rest in 16 oz containers. It makes a pretty good creamer that doesn't affect the coffee flavor they way coconut milk does.

@Happyflowerlady

Yes , I Have been using collagen peptide powder in coffee, and I like it. Sometimes, I use stevia, with or without the protein powder.

That was interesting, thanks for sharing the info in your post, and it's nice to see you.

I enjoy milk and eggs as long as I don’t spend too much time thinking about where they come from.

I rarely use milk anymore due to the high carb content.

I switched to unsweetened vanilla almond milk as a concession to my diabetes, it’s ok and it has a long life in the refrigerator which is very convenient for me.

I just started using the unsweetened vanilla almond milk too, I was surprised by the good taste. The one I get is called Breeze...good stuff, I'm glad I found it.
