Square Hanging Rods in Closet

I haven't ever seen those. They look like thinner versions of barn door tracks. Do they allow the hangers to slide easy?

Looks like the right side of the rod slides into the left, perhaps to make it adjustable for different closet widths. However many round shower curtain rods are adjustable to some degree. Perhaps the builder was just using what was on hand and readily available.

I am still redoing my SIL closets that are original to the house (1965). The hangers & shelf, similar to yours but round rod, are still in good shape. I replaced the wooden round rods because someone decided to paint them & the paint flakes off on the clothes.

They still sell that round style at our local Menards. Would it be very hard to switch them out? The wooden rod was easy to cut down & I've been able to keep all of the other shelving parts. I was glad to see that they are still being made if I need them.

I think I would have to replace the system, at least the one I use all of the time.

The house SIL is in has limited space so I want to get a 15" wide Billy bookcase from Ikea & on one side have about 12" space for long clothes between it & the wall. On the other side have longer double rods. There would still be a shelf across the top side to side. Something similar to this picture.

They look like they might have originally been the type of rod that had the hangers attached running by a ball type thing through the slot with the attached hanger hanging down from it.
Bingo - I bet that is the reason.

To me, it looks like a section of Industrial Curtain Track, normally used for heavy curtains.
Not used in a closet, uses a roller set up inside.
The brackets were the giveaway.

I’ve seen them before in hotels. No hooks were involved though there are some like that.

adding - Looking at the photo, someone didn’t install them properly.

I looked at WalMart's online site and the ones they have didn't look sturdy enough for what I need. They are basically 5/8" spring tension bars. In one closet I probably have over 100 pounds of clothes. I know it tok 6 car trips to move my clothes when I changed houses.
