Memories of the 1970's

I was pretty well isolated (culturally) a good portion of the 70's, so I don't remember much of the American TV shows
or trends.
From what I've seen of the reruns of shows, I didn't miss much.

Watergate, The UK had in Margaret Thatcher, it's first female prime minister.
The Beatles broke up, Elvis Presley Died and we had the emergence of Punk & Disco, ugh!

Strikes, power cuts, three day weeks, glam rock and punk,Radio Caroline and Radio Northsea International,University, frequent General Elections, three TV channels....
Suzi Quatro clad in black leather......;)

Owned a lot of second hand cars in the 70's.

Find someone getting reassigned to another base, buy their 'beater', then sell it to the next
person when you got orders.

Some of them were recycled many times.

As long as it got you off-base and back again, didn't really care about the make or model.

Being in dark, smoky rooms and auditoriums and stadiums where the incessant beat of rock music carried me away into glory.

Hearing the chants of "Peace Now," while attempting to release our country from the muck.

Having the hope of We Shall Overcome.

Working for the rights of women to control their very own persons.

Although these memories are more from the early seventies/late sixties......late seventies, settling into motherhood after years of education, colleges, universities and actual work.

So many memories from the 70s hit me like a freight train... I miss the 70s. A lot. I won't go into the tons of good memories, but a major bad one is missing my own high school graduation in '75. I was horribly sick and doc said I'd have to skip it so I listened to it on the radio with my parents, grandparents, and siblings. :(

Another memory is that I walked in the back door and heard the announcement on the portable radio atop the fridge that the Vietnam War was officially over... spring '75 I guess. For some reason I didn't know at the time, my gut told me that it was a moment I'd always remember and I have, right down to the visuals of exactly what the radio looked like. What I didn't know at the time was that in 1979 I'd be marrying someone who'd *been* in 'Nam. Maybe that's why the "important moment you'll always remember" thing happened.

Oh, yeah, the $300 car specials.
I was stationed at GTMO in 1971-2, I had a 1959 station wagon painted with house paint. I was the 55th owner.

Was in Okinawa Briefly, and three of us went in on a well used Toyota Crown. We dubbed it "Mud Turtle" as it was slow and dirty. Spent most of the first half of the seventy's in and around Vietnam, so missed out on part of it US trend wise, but still got the music even if it was a little late. The last half took a bit of adjustment. Still adjusting for that matter.

College years for me. Weed, acid and earnest dialogs about how we were going to save the world. I was a hippie wannabe.
Mostly good memories. Would have been better to have prepared for a proper, rewarding occupation instead.

Had a blue Panasonic tv mom bought for me. Thing lasted 6 years.

Damn, you guys were living it up while I was Grammer school!

I remember the Olympic Games at Munich (1972) and the horrible assassination of members of the Israelite ringer crew by Palestinians. My mother and I visited Munich only some days before. I remember the mini skirts and white laced boots of my classmates which I liked very much. It was a decade of unlimited freedom, at least for me since 1975 as I was 15 years old. But I never made use of it, never went to the disco, instead I started a 'caving' group (speleology) with friends and often alone went into the woods with my bike. I was always a lover of nature, not of artificial amusement. Girls? No way! I was much too shy.

I went through big changes in the 70's. The 70's started out and I was 8 years old playing with dolls and skipping rope and playing hopscotch out in front of the house. At the end of the 70's, I was disco dancing and roller skating and 17 years old and going out with boys right and left. The 70's were a huge roller coaster ride for me. In the between years, I just tried to follow everything my two older sisters were doing.
