Obscene money to be spent for the 2032 Olympic Games at Brisbane Australia.

$7 Billion to be spent for a new sports precinct.
The 'Gabba -an existing stadium will be knocked down and rebuilt, a new stadium built for a swimming venue, converted to a live music venue after the games.
A heritage listed Primary School is to be demolished.
All for two weeks of sport.
A spokesperson described the infrastructure splash as a “nation building”.

“This will consolidate this great city as a global city, as a global powerhouse, but it benefits not just Brisbane,”

“This will make an enormous difference to our economy, to our lifestyle, to how Australia is perceived, as well, to the world.”

In the mean time we have pensioners, single mothers and the rest being homeless. Living in cars and tents.
Stuff like this shows me, and the world that Governments care not for the homeless, for the jobless, for the mentally ill.

Why do we not wake, us, the public, and demand that those less fortunate be looked after?

Always seems the case...

Yeah, I was in Utah for the 2002 Winter Olympics and we were told the same thing. And it did... for a couple of weeks...

I enjoy seeing the Olympic athletes compete, but am no fan of the Olympic organization.

New Stadiums are built willy nilly in Australia and they always cost at least 40% more than the initial amount.
So sad.

Nobody makes money off the Olympic Games
Lots of people do, the Olympic organization makes a killing, so do the companies that build all those expensive venues and the like, and there are the recipients of the bribes needed to get the Olympics...

I think the Olympics probably should just permanently base somewhere, Greece would make sense. And a new more transparent, less corrupt organization is needed.

And this list missed the bribery scandal surrounding the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah, and no doubt many others.

The Olympics are still interesting but they've definitely lost their luster. Rather than amateurs competing for the glory of the sport, it's mostly professionals (like the basketball team) or the all-but-professionals. No "Cinderella Stories" any more. Lots of scandals and dirty-dealings.

I'll still watch, but not with the intensity that I used to have.

I did go to the 2010 Olympics. It was exciting being there. One of the events we attended was a ski jump event. The Americans were number one and two down the jump. We were able to wave our flags and yell "WE'RE NUMBER ONE!.....AND TWO!" for a couple of minutes. Then, it became, "We're number 3 and 4", followed by "We're number 7 and 12" and "We're number 16 and 23". At that point, we decided it was fun while it lasted and went off to drink Canadian beer. Ah, well.

At least that would be re-usable? Everything is more expensive than I expect, I remember being floored by the amount needed just for a small wedding reception, so I'm not surprised hosting a party for the whole world would cost billions.

The new Swimming Pool arena will cost $2.5 billion. A "Drop in Pool" will be utilised then after the games, the pool will be removed and the site will become a $2.5 billion live music venue. $2.5 billion live music venue

When the Olympic Games were restarted, "amateurs' were expected to be the idle sons of the filthy rich. Little by little, "ruffians" got into the games. then came corporate interests, and nationalistic concerns. Today, It's kind of hard calling a multi-millionaire pro , as an "amateur". As Alligatorob stated, the Olympic Committee never met a bribe, or corruption they didn't take. And I agree that the games should remain in Greece, and actually clean up the corruption.

Two further suggestions: The only prize the athletes can win should be a laurel wreath. And they must participate completely nude as in the ancient games. Women were not allowed in those days. But in my opinion nowadays they could participate as athletes and audience.

I resented every cent of the cost for the Vancouver Winter Olympics. There was dissent about having them so they only let the people of Vancouver vote and they favoured it because they got the infrastructure. The rest of the province ended up paying. Construction workers moved to the coast, wages skyrocketed, same for construction materials, housing, etc, etc.

These mega event always affect the locals the most. Lived in places with mega events. Traffic which in turn affects business and one's travel being number one issue besides the bill and all the other crap that comes with them.
