Does your abode smell a particular way?

Because we have three dogs, two of whom are seniors, and one of whom is my tiny old lady chihuahua who is somewhat incontinent so we lay down a pee pad in between walks, I’m always sensitive to the way the house smells.

I’m constantly washing dog beds and blankets. Both the rugs in the laundry room and den (where the dogs hang out the most) are both washable. They’re bathed and groomed every 4-6 weeks.

Plus I’m a picky housekeeper so I scrub and mop and clean all the time.

I also use plug in fragrances from Bath and Body works. They impart a subtle fragrance, not overpowering or noxious, and combined with the smells of washing powder and fabric softener my home always smells fresh. Several grands and my daughter, all of whom have an acute olfactory sense, comment “your house smells so nice!” That’s good enough for me!!

I have a dear Indian friend who does a lot of ethnic cooking, and her house always smells like curry! Makes my mouth water every time I visit her..I love curry!!

What about you? What does your place small like?

Not at all, but most everyone else's seems to...

We and our homes all have different odors, we just get used to the ones we smell most.
I think this is true and I'm a lot like @Ronni in this way in that I'm very conscious of the house potentially smelling like our dog, a Boxer, AKA giant house dog. So, I ask when my daughter comes home to visit... "Does the house smell okay? Doesn't smell like dog? Something else?"

I open the windows to get a cross breeze and blow out as soon as weather allows.

my daughter is the same she's very aware that her house will smell of dogs.. she has 3 eledrly dogs... but her house never does smell.. it always smells fresh

We have a dog and a cat. The cat is reliable in his litterbox, which is kept in the finished basement shower stall. I attend to it twice every day, morning and evening, and completely change out the litter every two weeks. That odor is under control, plus I have a small Febreze clip in the covered waste basket where I put the daily clumps.

My dog is a medium size labradoodle, pretty clean. He's currently on antibiotics and Prednisone, so he is drinking more water and more likely to have 'accidents' at night, although I get up twice during the night to let him into the yard. I'm using a belly band for the first time with him, and it works very well, many times dry when I get up to let him out. I have three, so I can change one when needed.

I also like to keep the front screen door open to let in air during mild days, or have windows open throughout the house. I sprinkle a mild deodorizer on the carpet sometimes before vacuuming, just to keep things fresh. Fabrics are known to pick up cooking odors also.

I don't think my house ever smells bad, but I don't nitpick about such things either. Well have pets for as long as we can and they are a welcome part of our family and welcome on the furniture, bed, etc.

My dog has been using the pee pads during the night for the last few months. Not every night, but 2 or 3 times a week. I dispose of them right away and use air freshener.

The people next door (condo) smoke pot every day. The smell comes into my kitchen! I don't know how. I used to be fearful a guest might think it was me (before recreational use was legalized here) but now it doesn't matter. I don't really mind.

My daughter and I are at each other’s homes frequently, so we I have a solemn pact. If either of us goes into the others house and there’s any smell other than fresh, we’ll say. Both of us feel strongly about having a fresh smelling house and so we rely on each other’s honesty.

Nooooo....that would be a terrible thing if it happened to me.. I hate the smell of weed, and I absolutely would be furious if neighbours drug habit was making my house stink...:oops:...it's bad enough here when my Romanian tenant Neighbour cooks... she stews onions almost every single day... and it floats over the garden and into my bathroom window... I absolutely wouldn't stand for weed smells coming through...

You could get used to the smell of your house and think it doesn't smell at all, but a stranger will notice it. My neighbor has three large dogs and she's probably unaware of any odor. It's rainy out today and they come back in wet and with muddy feet, but she's probably used to that too.

I remember camping during a rainstorm with a wet Irish Setter in the tent with us. Phew!

I know this is controversial, but I hate the smell of some ''old people'' houses...

It's a mix of staleness, cooking, urine.. cats... and very often Lavender... all mixed in together it's a horrible smell.. very dark and almost tangible

A few years ago, I tried roasting my own coffee. I thought my house would smell like a coffee house. Wrong!
I bought a bag of raw beans online & set up my little roaster in the kitchen.
Within a few minutes, smoke filled the whole upstairs & the house smelled like wet, soggy moldy hay. I learned that's what coffee smells like while it's roasting & that good smell only happens when it's done.

Reminded me of some women who smoke & think their perfume covers up the smell on their skin & breath. They smell like perfume mixed with tar.
Just makes ya want to get close. :ROFLMAO:

I notice a beef smell when I enter my apartment. I do or have done everything I can: fans, open windows (even in winter), cleaning, etc. Even air fresheners, although I know they're toxic.

I tried incense, but then people would think I'm a toker (I'm not). Then I read that incense is toxic too.

I guess I just have to live with the beef smell.

At least with elderly/disabled people it's not usually intentional or b/c they don't care, they've just gotten past caring for their home as it really needs it.

What's worse is someone who just doesn't care... O M Gosh, some of the homes I've been in as a home-visiting nurse... I kept a tube of Dolce and Gabbona hand cream in my car for the longest time. Come out of a "aromatic" house and smear some right under my nose then lots of deep breathing. Some smells are hard to get rid of once they get in your head (like goats).

I'm sure it does. Every home has its own smell. I have quilts that came from my MIL's and even though they've been washed their "smell" is in them. It's not bad but it smells like their house.
