SAN FRANCISCO -- ATMs provide great convenience -- but they're also longtime targets of thieves. Some use skimmers to steal your account number, or stand nearby to rob customers. Now there's a new kind of ATM fraud -- and a warning to watch out if you use the "tap" function on your debit card.

The tap feature uses radio waves to access your account -- no need to insert your card. But, some Chase Bank customers say thieves used the tap feature plus some ordinary glue to steal their money.

Pamela Bongiorno shows 7 On Your Side with our sister station, ABC7 News, how she got scammed at this ATM. "So I was using the ATM machine on the right hand side," she said. "My partner was here, the guy next to him was here. I inserted my card, it didn't work."

Then, a man in line offered advice.

"'Oh, if you have a chip in your card, you could tap it,'" Bongiorno said.

I never use the tap feature; I always insert my card. I also leave my cards in aluminum foil sleeves I made until I'm ready to use them. Aluminum offers RFID (radio frequency identification) protection. I also have an RFID protected pouch in which I keep the cards I won't be using that day.

End of February received an updated credit card with the 'tap feature'. My current chip/slide card with that agency expired 1 March. Did not activate the 'Tap Card' and have it securely secreted away in a steel ammo box. Willing, for now at least, to let the account go inactive.

One, heck only now am I getting a chip card accepted with dependability. And Two, agree using this new tap card may pose an account security concern. Furthermore Three, trying to keep up with the constantly changing and 'upgrading' technology is wearing on me. Call me slow and old. So be it. Rather be secure and old, thank you very much.

Your tap card doesn't also have a chip so you have that option as well? The new tap cards I got did.

Not necessarily. If they can ā€˜proveā€˜ that you gave your card to someone else, then it’s your problem. It’s always shocked me how parents will tell the kids the password or just let them use the card.
As it should be. I was thinking about this thread about people stealing other peoples account number and skimming money out without their knowledge. How could this possibly be anyone else’s fault?

If you willingly give your bank info to someone rise , then that’s completely different. At least I’d hope so.

Right. I don’t know. Occasionally there’re reports of banks fighting thefts, though usually it’s for debit cards. I don’t have the greatest respect for banks.

This is why I always use the ATM inside the bank...not one out in the street.
Yep me too.... and I always enure I have a small amount of cash typically around £15 on me, in case for any reason I'm in a place where for some reason I can't access a Bank foyer for the ATM. Very easy to find yourself in that position these days with literally dozens of banks closing down..

Many banks are closing the foyer ATMs at night because the homeless were sleeping in them or the occasional robbery in them. They keep the drive thru open.

I can’t recall ever seeing an ATM directly onto the sidewalk area. I’ve seen those in tv shows.

If people steal your money, isn’t it still the banks problem?
Only after you prove that somebody stole your money. That's a big hassle.

And if you pay for something with a debit card the money comes out of your account immediately. You do NOT have the right to dispute the charge if the item breaks or is never delivered, etc. You are always better off paying with a credit card rather than with a debit card.

Thanks.
I only use credit cards but good to know.
