Mystery Hero Saves Driver From Car Hanging Over Canyon Cliff In Idaho (ABC News)

The mystery hero who saved a 23-year-old driver from his car hanging off a canyon cliff in Lewiston, Idaho, has been identified as Jason Warnock, police said.

The good Samaritan was photographed pulling the driver, Mathew Sitko, from the window of his 2000 GMC Yukon dangling off a 30-foot drop above Bryden Canyon Road with only a chain-link fence stopping it from falling, according to a Lewiston Police Department news release.
Warnock, 29, hung out at the scene until the cops arrived, and when they did, he told them he had to go back to work and "left before they could figure out who I was," he told ABC News today.
"I didn’t feel like I deserved any credit or anything," Warnock said. "I just did what anyone would do, so I went right back to work and got out of there."

Warnock was traveling along Bryden Canyon Road for work when he noticed Sitko's Yukon hanging off the cliff, he said.
He then climbed up to get to the vehicle and tried to break the window with a multi-tool, he said.
"After I struck it with my multi-tool, [the car] rocked substantially each time, and that’s when I knew this wasn’t a good idea," Warnock said. "My heart was going as in any abnormal, unnatural situation."

Warnock then got Sitko to roll down the window, he said, adding Sitko wanted to save his iPod first.

"He threw me his iPod, gave me his hand, and I gave him a tug," Warnock said.
Though Warnock left the scene without giving his name to officers, they were able to track him down today after a photo of the rescue went viral.

The police department said it "would like to thank Jason Warnock for his quick and decisive actions in helping Mr. Sitko and preventing the situation from worsening."
Sitko’s vehicle had struck several shrubs and a tree before going off the road and resting on the edge of a cliff, police said.
Further investigation “showed some type of mental episode may have been responsible for the collision,” police added. “No other persons were involved or injured.”
Sitko suffered only minor injuries, police said.

Uh, not THAT important!

They say that a good percentage of people on a plane that has crashed and possibly on fire will try to get their stuff before getting off the plane.

Well, my TracFone doesn't have to be saved first, lol. :playful:

If he had turned around and left the kid in the car, I wouldn't have faulted him. Kind of anyway, how ridiculous. I saw on the news just how that car was barely clinging to the side, the last thing I can imagine thinking about is some gadget over life.

Thankfully we are not as attached to electronics as the younger generations. Though admittedly, I would be lost without internet.

I've had an iPod for about ten years. I put all my music and audio books on it. I now use it mainly for workout playlists at the gym with headphones. At home I put it in its charger and play it through the speakers.

But I wouldn't risk my life to save it!

I didn't even know what it was when my husband gave it to me for xmas in 2005! But I was very grateful I had when we went to live in Uganda! I took all of our CDs and put them on my ipod. Got tons of audiobooks on it as well. So we had all our music on one wee gadget. And since I had to iron every single piece of our laundry (don't ask!) I spent many hours ironing. That was when I listened to audiobooks. Made it an almost pleasant task. Without my ipod I would have missed out.

I used to use mine at the gym. Finally gave it to one of my grandsons. Now just use a Sony knock off to listen NPR while pulling weeds.

My phone acts as my ipod and I'm very much attached to it just like you see those kids, but, I still stay alert, for the most part and would through over the cliff if I thought it was getting in the way of me getting out of that car safely. :D

I keep my very dated ipod for gym workouts since it's so small it fits in the media pocket of my gym shirt. I have to drown out the very annoying BBC radio 2 station they always play in the gym. I have zero tolerance for stupid quizzes and pop star interviews. The music is usually bearable workout music but I prefer my own choices.

For audiobooks I now use my phone as it's much easier to use for those.

That is ludicrious....get a rythm going on the treadmill and have it broken with talk? I so envy you, AM (in a nice way).....all my teen and adult years the gym was one of my greatest enjoyments. So miss it.

I may have missed something (that happens all to frequently) but I don't understand how this guy came to be hanging off the cliff in the first place. Could it be he was focusing on his beloved ipod instead of his driving?

I've got my playlist arranged with the first 30 minutes with songs with good beats for the spin bike, then for about 30 minutes of resistance machines so a good beat is not required, then followed by more with a beat for rower, or elliptical. Miss the treadmill but should be back on it soon as my plantar fasciitis is getting better all the time. Treadmill workouts required a really good 1, 2, 3, 4 beat.

Last I had heard, they were still investigating exactly what happen, but, they did say a possible medical cause, maybe a seizure or something. I will see if I can find out anything more. My thoughts were like yours to when I heard about the ipod, these days a lot of accidents are caused by phone and ipod distractions along with the other two second taking the eyes off the road scenarios. Doesn't take but a couple of seconds to end up in such a situation and people just seize to care and still allow for numerous distractions while driving. There would be many less accidents if people got in their care and did as they should while behind the wheel, pay attention to what's going on around them on the road at all times. Speaking of the people causing these accidents. I have more than once yelled at a friend to get off the phone when they were trying to converse or text and drive at the same time. It infuriates me to no end.

So many people have died because some a**hole was texting or looking at the phone!
