Still Wearing Masks

Still love 50's & 60's music!
There are at least 2 counties in New York that still have a high infection rate. Fulton County and Montgomery County (where I live). So staff in all healthcare facilities still have to wear masks. Visitors don't have to be tested anymore. Nor do we have to take our temperatures upon entering the facility.

In the beginning, I was all in favor of masks and social distancing, since Covid was the worst health scare during my lifetime. But after 3 years, the patience is running out. Some people heard around May 18th or so, all masks will be gone.

I still wear a mask. I have my own guidelines for gatherings and so on.

When I phoned about my apartment flooding, they asked me a bunch of Covid screening questions. So even if I didn't care about getting sick (or making others sick), I'd hate to have the maintenance man refuse to come because I sneezed recently.

I think if the infection rate is still high there, wearing a mask is a reasonable request, especially in a health care facility. In my area the vaccination rate was high and the infection rate is not an issue.

I just went through two eye surgeries, the techs and people who worked the desk were not in masks. All the nurses and doctors did, which is a good thing. Don't want the surgeon cutting into my eye and sneezing in my face, lol. I still carry a mask in my pocket at all times and have some in each of my vehicles. If I need to put it on at any time, I have no problem with that. Otherwise, I don't wear a mask anymore when shopping, etc. I'm never very close to people or in large crowds.

There are no more mask "laws" in my state. People do what feels right for them which is good, I think. There are still mask mandates in hospitals and doctor's offices which will be repealed in May. Thank God.
There are no mask mandates where we live. I haven’t worn a mask in at least 3 months but I don’t go into any stores so don’t see anyone. It’s like heaven. 💕

I still mask up when I am out and about but I am only out for short while. There are a few, like me, wearing a mask. I get a few looks but no one has ever confronted, or asked why I still wear a mask. All I know is I have not been sick with any kind of cold. I have been ill but that was related to a hip problem. I was hospitalized in March of 2021 for a hip replacement. It was only for 24 hours and then I was released to go home.

I was shocked that I was allowed to go home the next day. They had me up on my feet as soon as the anesthesia wore off. At first things were hard at home but I learned to move around better as time passed, My son and my grandson came for 3 days after to be safe. I can't lie, I could have let them go home sooner but I was soaking up the love, having them here was a gift of time to spend with them.

Since my husband is the shopper of our family, he still masks up when he goes out which I’m very grateful for. He has had plenty of colds which I haven’t gotten so I hadn’t had a cold in about 7 or 8 years. Then about a month a ago he got really sick and within days, so did I and it was a wicked cold that knocked us both down.

For hip surgery, that is a quick release and recovery. That’s great that your son and grand son came to stay with you. That nice that you had that time together.

We have been blessed with a less dangerous strain of Covid, and I have enjoyed a cautious return to normal. I have masks in my car, but I haven't used them in months, but they are there if conditions change. I still see people occasionally wearing masks in stores. It doesn't bother me.

A new, peer-reviewed meta analysis on the perils of mask wearing:

All masks have bad effects, but
"The N95 mask leds to measurably worse effects compared to the surgical mask. The blood oxygenation was significantly decreased when using a N95 mask compared to a surgical mask, the perception of discomfort increased when the N95 mask was compared to the surgical mask." (from the study).

When taking AccessARide, which is usually shared with another I take a mask with me. If the other person is masked, I wear mine, as usually the person is dropped off at a cancer hospital, and I feel I'm making their ride more comfortable. I'm very sensitive to cancer patients.

At the beginning of April, masks went away in California. At my job they are still required within 6 feet of clients and people are wearing the blue surgical masks mostly.

@NorthernLight That line of questioning still surprises me. When I had to have the furnace repaired (this was the previous owners) they had a repair guy come in as the maintenance man didn't have the part. Height of Covid, no mask on him. I didn't say a word.

I'm still wearing a mask when I have to go out i public - for several reasons.
1) I'm recovering from radiation treatment for Lung cancer. The medical crew at the Cancer Center are still always masked. For their sake - and mine, I mask up.
2) I'm 86 years old
3) And last but definitely not least, there are too many anti-vaxxers out there who are driving the risk of infection up for the rest of us and there is no way to identify them so they can be given a wide berth.
I rarely shop in public anymore and when I can't avoid it, I always mask up. I like living too much.
