Women Don't Drive!

Funny, for the longest time I had always seen older couples out, the wife was always the one doing the driving. Why is that? Ladies, are you now the driver in your family? My husband passed at 51, but he was always the driver. I could get lost just backing out the driveway he said. I did learn to get farther afield when he was sick and in the hospital.

Even learned a strange city, Scottsdale AZ, when we there in clinical trials. Thank God, he was awake and would often play the part of GPS system. There were a few times we would go on a great adventure when I would get lost but I somehow found the way to our destination. Guess none of you are going to step up and want to go for a drive with me. LOL
 

My great-grandfather bought a Model T in 1917. His daughter, my grandmother, said she wanted to learn to drive it. Her brothers laughed at the idea of a woman driving. Great-Grandpa said that if she wanted to learn to drive, he'd let her do it (she was his favorite child).

She did learn to drive, but was nervous about backing it out of the barn or driving it back into the barn. She came home one day and asked one of her brothers to put the car away. He refused, saying if she thought she could drive, she could darn well put it in the barn herself. She pulled into the garage, but got flustered, hit the accelerator and drove it right through the back of the barn, luckily doing very little damage to the car as the barn wood was rickety.

Her brothers, of course, were triumphantly giving her a hard time about the accident. See, we told you women can't drive cars! Pa won't ever let you drive again! I guess you've learned your lesson!

Pa told the boys that she could drive the car through the back of the barn any old darn time she wanted! I don't think she ever drove it through the barn again, but she drove that car all over creation and never had another accident.

I used to beg for her to tell me that story over and over again.
 
I have always driven, started at 15. First car I got to pick at 16 was a little four shift Ford Pinto. Uncle drove it home, explained and showed the basics and sent me on my way. I still miss that car, it was fun to drive and cute as button. White with a tan interior and vinyl top. It makes me smile now to know what simple things could be such a big part of our happy memories.

I almost always drove my husband, because he was a drinker and I'm not, so I was almost always the designated Driver.. Also he had a terrible sense of direction.. and I have a very keen sense.. so that was another reason.

As I got older and my knee started to be painful.. ( I drive a manual he drives a sporty semi -automatic).. he'd sometimes drive my car ( his car was too big for me) to our destination and I;d always drive back..

My STBEX.. is a very clever guy, he can turn his hand to anything and be very good at it.. but he cannot reverse park without a revesing camera.. whereas I can reverse with my eyes closed..and not touch a thing !

Don't know, but when I was young my grandmother did 90+% of the driving.

That doesn't sound like a good idea, I have hit enough stuff backing with my eyes wide open. Then again maybe I should try it...

Well I don't actually do it... but I;m a very good reverse Parker, it;s been commented on by many.... and you know why men aren't ?.. because men think That 6 inches is this big...

As I age I have noticed that it's harder to fully turn my neck to look back, making backing up a bit harder. Mirrors and the new backup cameras help, but I have to be more careful. I had give up reverse parking until I got a vehicle with one of those cameras, makes a big difference.

my husband swear by his.. he loves it.. and yes I think it's a fantastic idea if you have neck issues...
 
I never felt comfortable behind the wheel, I took my driver's test 3 times but failed
Sometimes I wish I had driver's license&car{ have non driver's license instead} but I've adapted
I'm thinking of all the money I've saved, in this day in age with idiots on cell phones being distracted as they drive, I'm better off not driving

I learned to drive when I was 14, got my license when I was 15. I bought my first car about three months before I could legally drive it, and snuck it out a few times before I got my license lol. It was a yellow and white 4 on the floor Ford anglia. I loved that car!!

awwww... the lovely old ford Anglia... I had a red & white one....
 
When Dave had his cataract surgery a while back, the driving fell to me, much to his dismay. I hadn’t driven much since we’d retired and it took a couple weeks for me to feel comfortable behind the wheel. Made me realize I should drive more. Except Dave the control freak doesn’t want me too. 😜
 
I do 99.9% of the driving. Spouse has difficulty seeing in rain or at night. Works out fine, because I'm the one who loves cars. He could care less what he drives, LOL.

I spent 18 months researching and test driving various cars to find my "last car". Love my car and I HATE when my spouse drives it. He learned to drive on old Detroit cars, so he constantly wiggles the steering wheel and doesn't keep an even pressure on the accelerator. The Edge Sport has some of the best handling in its class and a twin-turbo V6 with 315 hp and 350 lb.-ft. torque. Watching him drive my car is like dragging fingernails on a chalkboard.......ugh!

One of our friends also loves cars so she and I talk cars all the time. We decided if I die, Spouse should give the Edge to her, and go buy himself something reliable and boring, like a Toyota Corolla.

OTOH, I bought my Edge back in 2017. In a couple of years I might spring for that Mustang Mach-E, which is almost as fast 0-60 as my Edge! Woohoo!
 
My husband does most of the driving since I’m usually always at home but he’s not the better driver . I’m older and have more driving experience. He has no sense of direction and wouldn’t dream of asking for directions.
