Canned Potatoes. Are They Edible?

I can't even stand the thought of summer coming and I want to use the stove top as little as possible. Never use the oven in the summer.

I don't even want to boil potatoes. I bought a few yellow ones today. Small and I'll microwave them. Anyone tried canned potatoes. How are they?

I don't tend to buy many canned vegetables except beets or corn.

Okay, personal opinion here... to me, they don't taste much like potatoes *but* others in the household like them, so I buy them. They're okay to put in things like stews and soups, but the only way I really like them (the diced) is to fry some in a pan and add a beaten egg over top to scramble together... sometimes spinach, and serve it with toast. Another reason I buy them for the pantry is that I can get the no salt added version and then add the sodium-free seasonings of choice. (that would be onion powder, garlic powder, pepper, and sometimes salt-free Cajun seasoning.)

I do... not very often.. but I do put them in soups, because it's a whole lot easier to always have a can of potatoes on hand instead of specifically having to go and buy fresh potatoes just for the soup...

As kate said.. on their own they don't taste like real potatoes.. but chopped up in the soup, you can barely tell the difference from real. My sister slices them and put them in salads

You know, I eat them right from the can (well, I put them in bowl first), with a little S&P and it hadn't occurred to me to use them in soup. That's actually a great idea and would save a lot of time. I could even add them to ready-made soup that are too sparse. Great idea, @hollydolly.

Also, been meaning to say, I like your new avatar. :)

I can't remember having ever eaten canned potatoes. Remy, everybody's taste is different. You won't know if you like them unless you try them. Bite the bullet and buy one can and give it the ol' taste test. They might be okay.

If you do try them, I'd suggest getting them whole instead of sliced as the sliced variety seem to pick up too much of the water in the can.

thanks Medusa.. but just to be clear, it's an avatar I've used a few times on here.. my husband is also in the picture but I cropped him out...:ROFLMAO:

I bought them once. They weren't bad, but something was missing. I'm not sure what. I never had a desire to try them again. Especially when baking, boiling, or frying potatoes is one of the easiest things to prepare.

Hey, at least you're using your own picture; I can't find one that doesn't freak me out, of late. LOL! Just realized the irony of that, what with my Medusa persona and icon and all... :ROFLMAO:

I don't think I've ever seen frozen mashed potatoes, outside the formed kind as in "Tater-Tots."
Have you tried instant mashed potatoes?
I don't like frozen mash..or dried mash..like Smash ..Ugh!! it all has a weird taste.. but that said.. now I'm on my own I never peel potatoes.. I'd rather buy chilled ready made mashed potato..because I use so little.. . The only time I buy potatoes is when I want to make Baked potato.. and then I just buy one large one..

I keep frozen tempura battered potato fritters in the Freezer.. I cook them in the air fryer, they are very good..
