The winner of the Eurovision Song Contest had the most incredibly long nails. What is this fashion these days for incredibly long claw-like nails? How does the person go to the toilet, wash hair or indeed do anything?

I've often marvelled at the money so many women spend on nails. I've always done my own, I do tidy cuticles and file my nails to a reasonable length. I like Avon polishes. I used to bite them in my youth but conquered the habit. I find pale neutral nail polish best because darker colours do look awful when chipped.

I don't like artificial nails. They not only look artificial, they're toxic. Not to mention that your natural nails become extremely damaged. Once you have them, you're locked into expensive upkeep. Some women think they're essential and will spend whatever it takes to maintain them. They're often considered a status symbol. I don't care if other women wear them, that's their choice, but they're not for me. I prefer natural looking nails and wear mine reasonably long and painted in a neutral color that goes with everything.

How someone does anything with incredibly long claw-like nails is... carefully, or they have someone do it for them because they're handicapped.

This isn't a new trend... impossibly long nails have been. fashion for many years now and everyone always asks the same question about how people manage to carry out every day tasks.

I have my nails done at the salon, and I'm not scared of having dark polish because my polish never gets chipped.. if it did happen I would immediately have my nails redone..

The UK singer had them too.

Years ago young girls who had long nails struggled to find
an office job, because of the nails, they were unable to type,
they didn't have to be really long, just enough to be seen as
being long, I suppose the same goes today.

Sort of sends out a signal to a man with any sense, give that woman a miss.

I do think having nice nails, beautifully kept are an enhancement to any lady. I like classic red and pink shades myself and it's fun to tone them with your outfit and makeup. But I wouldn't have false nails and I wouldn't have them longer than just over fingertips. Practicality is important, we need to function in life. So the point of very long nails is rather a mystery to me.

The ancient Chinese Mandarins used to grow nails so long they needed little golden supports to protect them. Long nails were meant to show they were rich enough to own slaves to do everything for them.
