I Just Paid My Car Insurance For 6 Months.

It's getting out of hand. Almost $750.00. For 6 months. The car is still covered though it's getting up in age. I wonder if I should drop that for the next renewal. I know I did the last few years of my old car. It wouldn't take much to "total" the thing. I believe that would be collision. I do have high liability, because I'm paranoid and of course I believe uninsured driver is required.

I had the thought, perhaps I wouldn't have a car when I fully retired but I don't think that is going to be the case.

Do others find their car insurance going up and up like everything else. Tips to lower it? I have a completely clean driving record at this time. Knock wood.

Yes, insurance is going up along with everything else. The cost of having a plumber come fix something seems to have doubled. We all are bearing the cost of inflation.

Tips to lower it?
My insurance said I'd get a discount if I downloaded an app that would monitor my driving. I had to drive at least 500 miles within 3 months to qualify, and I managed to just make that. But then it said 'congratulations, the discount will be applied on the next renewal', but since the next renewal isn't until December I'm kinda bummed.

My aged CRV only has liability. I can handle repair or replacement myself. I recall when someone rear-ended my ex's car years back. The offender's insurance sent it to a collision repair shop. To repair was more expensive, so their insurance considered it totaled and paid her off.

My 10 year old Ford.. costs £250 per year for Fully Comprehensive, free exchange locks and new keys if need be not just on my car but my house too.. free windscreen replacement and free courtesy car ..

This is with an international Motoring breakdown company.

prior to that I had been with Direct Line for years even had them cover our cars in Spain.... no claims.. no driving offences.. and yet my premiums went up significantly year after year. About 5 years ago it doubled overnight..so I called around and got a quote for the cover I have now.. which was more than 1/2 the quote of DL>.. so I called them and asked them to match it, they said they couldn't so I left...

To date I've used the windscreen replacement , and had the locks on my car and doors at my house changed.. and my payments have risen only by £20 since I first took it out!

has a 2004 hyundai sante fe until 1/2020 when i got plowed into by a car... cops estimated 40-50 mph from damages. if it hadn't been squashed would have been almost worthless at 16 years old and closing in on 200,000 miles. i doubt i would have gotten $500 even for a mercy trade-in. since it was totalled, i ended up getting over $3500... woo! hoo!

I think I will drop the car before the next renewal, as I did with my last car. I agree, it doesn't take much to total a car. Though when my stepfather got rear ended and it totaled that car, he got more than he expected. I was surprised also. We have the same insurance company. But at the car's age, I don't think it's worth it anymore.

OMG, I hope you were not injured. I got very little for the trade in of my last car. I think there is some increase when the car is totaled? Seems that is what my stepfather got.

If you have comprehensive $750 for 6 months isn't bad.

We have liability only and it's a whole lot less. If you can risk the loss liability only is the way to go.

And as others have said, shop around.
£750 for Comprehensive..for an aged car... No, that's ridiculous

As I said I pay £250 fully comp.. with an second named driver..as well as Free windscreen replacement and free courtesy car in the event I might need one

I think this will be the case by the next renewal. Cars getting too old.

I should shop around and I will be considering it. The office used to be really nice but it's a new agent and they have moved. I haven't dealt with them since then. Not sure how they are now. I know my stepfather got treated well when he totaled his car with the old office group.

you can do it all online... search for Insurance quotes.. then if you find one you like is just a matter of adding the date on which you wish yor new Insuance to start.. and then deleting your diect debit to your old company. If for example your old Insurance is due to expire on the 30th of May at 11.59 am.. you just insert the date on the online form of your new company to start at midnight on the 31st of May

I do worry about this. I still carry full coverage on a 2008 model. I should probably just change over to liability, the car only leaves the drive one or two days a week. I also don't go far, just a mile or two from the house. Haven't been on the freeway for along time.

The car only has 40,000 miles, hoping I would never have to buy a new one.

I also thnk I should shop around not only for car insurance but also my homeowners insurance. I just hate to change. Been with the same insurance over 40 years. I have never had a problem with a claim on auto or home.

I probably should but oh do I hate change and I've been with this company for years and years. I'll give this some thought.
this is exactly what the insurance companies rely on. People who are 'loyal'.. despite the fact they're being ripped off... or people who are lazy.. or people who simply are scared to move... and in all honesty, it's daylight robbery of trusting people like you who put your faith in those companies.

Start by looking at the rate you would be quoted if you were a newcustomer ..with the same car etc... I bet there will be a huge difference in what they will quote to what you're paying ..

ok.. now spend an hour shopping around online.. go to an insurance quote website.. (we have several here).. I'm sure you must have too... and input your details to cover exactly what you have covered now.. and see what the difference is...you don't have to accept any quote.. you might be lucky and find you're already getting a good deal... or conversely find you're just about to save yourself BIG Bucks every month

Yeah…mine was high too. So I got mad and dropped one car off the policy. Then my dear partner says…but I like driving that car. So…added it back and the policy was even higher

I lowered the cost of mine by raising the deductible, and putting the difference in savings for just in case
A good idea.

Insurance is, like gambling, always a bad investment in the long run. It has to be, otherwise insurance companies would lose money. Just like casinos where too many people win.

What insurance can do for us is provide avoidance of catastrophic economic losses. If you have sufficient savings to replace your car you will come out ahead not buying comprehensive insurance. Taking higher deductibles are another good strategy.

Liability is often required by law, and even if not the possible losses are larger. The kind of low probability high consequence event many of us need protection from. Insurance is also often required to cover something you have a loan out on.

I hear you. That's really low mileage. I have around 86 thousand which isn't bad.

I have renters insurance also with this company, which is now required. If I ever buy a place, I'll have to insure that also.

$750 seems steep for 6 months. I pay £620 ($789) to cover 2 cars Fully Comprehensive over 12 months. And the premium has gone down from last year.

Just to give you an idea of what my insurance is paying for. One of those cars is reasonably powerful, with a 0-60 time in the 5 seconds, and top speed to match, Admittedly I have full no-claims bonus which reduces the premium. Maybe it’s time for you to shop around?

Yeah, when I changed carriers, my old carrier said they could match it....

I became a bit incredulous
