Post the Flag of Your Country

I notice the Brits referring to the Union Flag. As a kid in Canada we always called it the Union Jack. I wonder when this changed here, if it did. I can’t remember a reference to it by any name in years.

Since I wandered slightly off topic, I become really annoyed when see a tattered flag being flown by a business. Shame on them.

It's been called the Union Flag since around 1908.. altho' very often used interchangeably with the Union Jack... but according to sources, the Union Flag is the correct term.. while the Union Jack should only be used when the flag is aboard ship

And Canadians are so polite, we say 'thank you' to Automated Teller Machines.
I actually penned that joke myself! :) When I was younger I'd sell jokes to local Comedians for 20 bucks and cases of beer. lol!

Many believe it is only the 'jack' when its flown from Naval Warships and shouldn't be called the Union Jack at any other time. However, according to the Flag Institute "it is generally accepted that either name may be used".

Naval vessels began to fly the ‘Union Jack’ only when in harbour, and from a specially rigged ‘jackstaff’ in the bows.

The term ‘jack’ predates the ‘jackstaff’ by over 150 years.

Neither is ‘Union Jack’ a name specific to a Union Flag flown in the bows of a warship.
The Admiralty used both names interchangeably from the seventeenth century onwards, irrespective of use.

An Admiralty Circular of 1902 pronounced that either name was officially valid.

And in 1908 Parliament approved this verdict, confirming that ‘The Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag’.

So what happens if Scotland goes independent…then the UK will have to change its flag…these are some options….

I think that is Lake Louise in Alberta. The green tinted water is because of the mineral content washing down from the mountains. JImB.
Yes I think so too. I saw it on a school trip in 1973 then again while biking (motorcycle) in the late 70’s. Driving my bike through the mountains was a blast. The colour is mesmerizing. It looks photoshopped, being it’s so turquoise.
