A Systematic Review of the Link Between Autism Spectrum Disorder and Acetaminophen: A Mystery to Resolve

There is growing research into possible links between the things expectant mothers are told to do…or do routinely during their pregnancy. Concerns over autism are real…and have caused mothers to shun vaccinations and other things they fear. It would be nice to have some true guidance to help avoid this ever increasing problem.

First, Autism Spectrum Disorder is not A single disorder. It's multiple symptoms over multiple age related disorders, which may have multiple causes. It's like saying all deaths are caused by one thing, and the treatment is one thing.
And self-appointed internet "authorities" crank out misinformation, and frankly crack pot ideas as the causes and treatments. Somebody always has some simple cause, or a simple treatment, which somehow the entire medical field knows nothing about, or is trying to suppress.
I think the best information comes from your own doctor.

Tell me how to post the link….this is one of several studies ran by NIH and others. Research that has been published in JAMA…hardly crackpot
Just highlight and copy the link from the page where you found it and paste it here.

This is an interesting topic but I haven't seen any concensus on the cause.

I read a similar article in Neuroscience News a few months ago. Both Autism and Alzheimer's have soared since the 70s. I have always thought the causes were something we began doing then. Most of us, particularly pregnant women switched from aspirin to Tylenol. We also started using microwave ovens in our homes. Many new agriculture/lawn care herbicides and pesticides came on the market. I also know many forms of plastics were invented. Some used in food containers we now know are cancer causing. Thank you for posting this article. We all need to be better informed about Autism.

I usually scroll down to the conclusion or abstract with articles like this -- lest my brain explode -- so I thought this was the pertinent sentence in the conclusion:
All 16 studies selected in our data showed a consistent association between acetaminophen and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. The effects were particularly stronger for attention/hyperactivity symptoms.
I agree they need more studies and it looked like the connection between ADHD and acetaminophen was stronger than the connection with autism spectrum disorder, but if I was pregnant I would stay away from it just to be safe.

I agree about the BPA. People should be very cautious about plastics for food…and endless mothers heating formula in a plastic bottle using the microwave!!!!!!
A few years ago there was an advisory issued that said if you drink plastic bottled water and you leave the bottle in your hot car you should throw it out. They warned you not to drink it if the water was in the heated bottle. Made sense.....but then you realize the water is shipped in trucks that are not refrigerated.... So when you buy it at the store it has already been in the heat! Think of all those plastic water, juice, soda bottles out there.

I also read a study on Neuroscience News that said the brains of babies who go on to develop ASD grow out of order in the womb. Some areas grow faster and larger than others. The sequence at which they develop is also different. The hope was that if they could scan babies shortly after birth they may be able to identify early those babies that may develop ASD.
