ha ! when I was a child.. Many ..many women didn't own a washing machine, ( my mother did )... and they would take their washing to the local Baths, which as well as housing the local swimming pool would often have Huge area filled with washing machines, boilers and drying racks... and was affectionately known as ''The Steamie''.... so it sounds like we're going backwards..Seems to be 'the' latest thing...the Steam washing machine.
Anyone heard of? Know of?
Don't know much about..
Do you?
...

Oh! So right^There is always someone out there trying to convince us that we desperately need something we didn't know we needed...or wanted.
It's called "business".
Yes I was told that too Mizmo.... my gran used to say that it's where friendships were formed and broken... . Apart from my granny I've never known anyone who went to the Steamie altho' sometimes when I was over at my granny's house I'd see women taking their washing in big bundles on prams, as you describe.., so I'm delighted to hear you remember it ...Yep..remember the steamie well...
I went there every week with mother and clothes loaded in my brother's 'pram' with the 'big' wash.
It was a great meeting spot for the local ladies to share all the latest gossip.![]()
Yes it was more in my time than yours . Many of the newer tenement buildings then had wash houses in the backyard.Yes I was told that too Mizmo.... my gran used to say that it's where friendships were formed and broken... . Have you ever seen the Glaswegian Cassic Play.. 'The Steamie ''?... It's the usual understated type of Glasgwegian dark comedy..I love it... it's on DVD..I've had a copy for many years..
I was raised in the ''posh'' red sandstone tenements... we didn't have a steamie in the back court....Yes it was more in my time than yours . Many of the newer tenement buildings then had wash houses in the backyard.
My granny lived in the 'posh' red sandstone type and I used to help her too. Every Saturday by order of my Dad.
I got sixpence pocket money from her and Grandpop...Gawd a whole shilling..I was rich for the day.
I heard about that play but never did see it. Just had a quick look on Youtube and it is there so will have a look later.
This new steam washing does not appeal to me at all.
