Yes!! A plot helps immenselyFor many years movies have relied too much on visual sensationalism and CGI for my taste. The best movies have an actual plot. Don't you think?

It makes a huge difference. I had the volume turned down for a bit while a movie played. Without it, there was no mounting suspense. I rewound and watched again. The music that goes with them, equally great.
A huge difference. I mean, sound alone has improved dramatically since the old black & white movies. The songs are matched so well that they really enhance the movie on a completely different level. One can feel extra connected. After the movies over you might still be humming the music for hours. It makes a huge difference. I had the volume turned down for a bit while a movie played. You wouldn't have a list of those movies, would you, OA?Agreed. Good ones are few and far between, and some that COULD have been good if they hadn't devoted most of the storyline to naked sex.
I did not watch enough of any of them to actually remember. You wouldn't have a list of those movies, would you, OA?![]()
I am being serious for a change. Maybe it's my European upbringing but I have not seen one single movie that I found really sexually explicit! Maybe in some independent movie theatres that featured sexploitation films way back when, but in the movies I watched in theatres and on TV there have been a few flashes of nudity, maybe or a scene that lasts a minute or two and that's about it. I think the censors are doing their job! Strangely enough, what should be censored more often is the extreme violence in so many movies. Sex = R rated, Violence = PG 14! I think it all dates back to the Puritans!I did not watch enough of any of them to actually remember.
The opening scene in Game of Thrones. I never watched any more of it. Figured it could only get worse.I am being serious for a change. Oops, I forgot: there was Tom Cruise in Eyes Wide Shut, a movie that got past the censor! Okay, so I watched one erotic movie! I spoke too soon!
I was equally offended but in my case it was the violence! I only watched two episodes and then gave up!The opening scene in Game of Thrones. I never watched any more of it. Figured it could only get worse.
I won't recommend the Saw franchise to you then.I was equally offended but in my case it was the violence! I only watched two episodes and then gave up!
Yup. That's why better half and I primarily watch British TV and film and are big fans of Nordic Noir series. We watch almost nothing made in America --- no plot, no character development, just special effects. Yeah, I know, some exceptions. For many years movies have relied too much on visual sensationalism and CGI for my taste. The best movies have an actual plot. Don't you think?
I couldn't resist it and looked it up! Good Lord, there's even a Saw VI! My granddaughters love that kind of stuff but I can't understand what draws people to violent, gruesome and dark shows and movies. I like my fare nice and undemanding! BTW. I shouldn't have written that violent shows "offend" me, I ignore them because they make me feel uncomfortable!I won't recommend the Saw franchise to you then.
Yes, it makes the Texas Chainsaw Massacre seem like a Saturday morning cartoon.I couldn't resist it and looked it up! Good Lord, there's even a Saw VI!
I got caught up in the recent comic book to big screen transition. I was allowed to read Little Lulu and Donald Duck when I was a child, but Batman and Superman were forbidden. I didn't question it, and never felt the need to explore them, since they didn't seem like comics anyway, and I was quite happy with Daffy Duck and Goofy. Later, I took an interest in the first TV series of Superman. What little boy wouldn't, but something changed around 2010, when Iron Man, a film I wasn't even aware of, let alone the knowledge that such a character had been developed earlier in the comics, was introduced at the theater. My sister and her husband took me to it, and I was amazed. Yes, it was loaded with explosions and fantasy, but it had something else. It was a beautifully crafted story, a piece of writing with a message and characters that people could empathize with. Sure, Iron Man II and III, were dull, but it was all due to a lack of creativity in writing and story development. Hollywood just needs to hire more creative writers. They've got the CG stuff down pat.Well one obvious reason movies are getting worse is that they used to be adapted from best selling novels and today they're adapted from comic books. That's a pretty clear case of dumbing down.
TV series were cancelled, and critical staff began isolating. Same with some of the top stars and key personel in films. They actually announced it was happening.I've noticed many of the movies made post Covid are terrible. It seems everything was scaled back including cast and production sets.
As they say: Chacun a son gout, Fyrefox. I will never understand how you can love "palpable fear and dread! But it would be a sad world if we were all the same!Since Iām mostly into science fiction and horror, I believe that there are still some worthwhile movies coming out in those genres. Bird Box and A Quiet Place are two examples that combine innovative writing, good acting, and state-of-the-art special effects in an atmosphere of almost palpable fear and dreadā¦![]()
