It has been 156 years since our Confederation in 1867. The Railroad Trilogy, by Gordon Lightfoot is a poetic masterpiece

In 1967, the Canadian Broadcasting TV network commissioned Gordon Lightfoot to compose a song to be used on the national Canada Day broadcast. Gord wrote this epic musical tribute to our national railways, the Canadian National, and the Canadian Pacific. He did it over three hectic days and nights. As always he wrote the lyrics, and the score sheets, and the arrangement, by himself. Standing alone on a CBC sound stage in Toronto, he played it live. Over the years I was a big fan of Gord, a man who died this year at age 83. Canada lost it's most prodigious song writer and singer this year. Here are the lyrics. Read it as a poem, in three parts. The first part talks about "the green dark forests, too silent to be real ". "Long before the white man, and long before the wheel, the tall majestic mountains stand alone against the sun ".

Here are the complete lyrics, by Gordon Lightfoot.

At 8 minutes long, the Trilogy was three times as long as a contemporary popular song in 1967, but it went on to sell over three million singles, around the world. Over the course of his 50 year career, Gord sold ten million albums, and his songs were "covered by over 300 singers and bands " With over 250 songs in his song book, he could play for seven nights straight, and never repeat a song. He never performed any one else's material on stage, and he never co-wrote with anyone else. A truly amazing talent.

Happy Canada Day to all of my fellow Canadians on SF. Peace, Order, and Good Government is our national motto. From Sea to Sea to Sea. JimB.

Lightfoot was indeed a National Treasure. He is sadly missed.
I met Gord a number of times over the years. First when I was driving cab for Diamond Cab and I picked him up after a show at the River Boat on Yorkville Avenue. Met him at a party held by Joni Mitchell, when she lived on Scollard Avenue, and again at a record album release party at Early Morning Productions, his company office on Avenue Road. Gord loved to party, and he didn't mind having fans over to his various houses in Toronto. The premier party house was at Beaumont Road in Rosedale. That was the site of a legendary 5 day free for all, with Bob Dylan, Peter McQuinn, Joni Mitchel and Ronny Hawkins and the Hawks in attendance. The neighbors were NOT amused. Gord was a smart business man, because when he bought a nicer bigger house in Toronto, he never sold them, but held on to them as future investments. His sister Bev became his personal business manager, for about 20 years. Bernie Fiedler was his long time agent, manager and friend.

Gord liked to go on extended long distance canoe trips in the far northern parts of Canada, usually in July or August, and those trips were 500 to 800 miles long, with a select group of very experienced canoe trippers. This was his annual retreat from the music world, a chance to get away from the bight lights and dry out, and loose weight. After a health scare where he suffered a aortic bleed during a concert in his home town of Orillia, he was flown by medivac helicopter to McMaster University Health in Hamilton, where he very nearly died. He was at Mac Health for three months. After that experience, he took up a much healthier life style, including daily work outs at the Four Seasons Hotel's health club, which he continued for almost 40 years. He stopped drinking, altogether, and he bought a 46 foot racing sail boat, which he named the Golden Goose. He raced for many years in the Great Lakes over night challenge races, of distances from 300 to 400 miles, wining his share of trophies.

Gord quietly supported a number of Canadian charities, mostly to do with the environment, and he also paid his side men a solid $100,000.00 a year, if they worked with him, or not. Some of his back up band were with him for 30 years, or more. That is quite a big deal in the music industry, for sure. He also took care of his kids, quietly making sure that they, and their Mothers were well supported. His net worth at the time of his death this year is estimated to be around $40 million dollars.
