I woke up to a dead battery this morning, but all taken care of.

Did you take care of the dead battery yourself? I'm impressed if you did. I'm fair on the road, am a good driver and have helped to change tires in the past but I am a woman and feel more secure when a man who knows what he is doing or a roadside assistance co. takes care of it for me. Just being honest.

Hi Chic ;) No I had a neighbor assist. I like roadside assistance also when needed and out on the roads.
I can change my own oil though, but don't. Am a good driver. One ticket in my life for going over the
speed limit. Three warnings in my life for under the speed limits. A couple parking infractions....that's
about it.

I will agree with you in that I feel more secure having someone in the know, taking care of those things
for me that come up. As a woman, I feel the same way you do...

I have been in several accidents in my life, Hit by a drunk driver at the age of 21. I had injuries, he lost
his license. A few other road accidents, hit by another for their driving issues at the times.
 

A few speeding tickets otherwise these situations. Flat tires no problem, Cadilac auto engine kill anti theft device shorting out on the Schuylkill Expressway during rush hour managed to get over to the berm & bypass that system nightmare. Don't like the engine stop on our 2023 Kia Soul that activates while stopped at a light. Read manual to see how to disable. So all is good & not bad for 66 years of driving.

I think so, no accidents that were legally my fault and not too many tickets. However...

I'd have said yes pretty much until a couple of months ago...

I fell asleep at the wheel, was very lucky nothing damaged but my ego. I was tired, had been driving for a while and was fighting off a drowsy feeling. Done that many many times before and it worked out fine. Gave up driving for a couple of day to think about it. Decided no more driving when feeling drowsy for me, I think that will fix it. Anyway pretty quickly got back to my regular driving, just being a bit more careful.
 
Got my license at age 15. No tickets, warnings, citations or accidents but I've fallen
asleep at the wheel three times and had near collisions, and near "over the
cliff" incidents. (Angels protecting me!)
Had some exciting life-threatening experiences traveling up the Alcan.
I have quick recoveries on mountain roads, no fears, but the things I
did with my vehicle when I was a teen were insane and terribly illegal!

I keep a rechargeable Lithium Jump Starter battery pack in my vehicles.
Never have to worry about a dead vehicle battery, jumper cables, or finding someone to help.
Honestly I haven't used it yet on my vehicle but have helped several others out.
Don't let the small size fool ya. It works GREAT !!! Found it on Amazon.
The one pictured is currently unavailable on Amazon but there are many others.
It looks "scary" LOL but is really simple to use and completely safe.
Hook clamps to car battery, insert plug into Lithium battery pack, start car. Disconnect from car battery. Easy peasy.

I was and am a safe driver. Yes, I have received a few citations for speeding and 1 for a violation of ignoring the "No Right Turn On Red" sign. I never used my so-called "Get Out of Jail Free" card that it is called around here.

I have had a few cops hand me their card and have honored them only about one-third the time. One cop was speeding at 97 in 65 zone and there was no way I was not going to cite him. He tried to argue the point, but I shut him down when I told him, if he kept going, the price was going to go up. He sped out of the spot he was in. The next day, he called my Barrack's Sgt. and told him I wasn't True Blue. My Sgt. said he told him, maybe you should obey the rules of the road, then we wouldn't be having this conversation and I can assure that this Trooper is True Blue and that is why you were cited. He was doing his job protecting the other drivers. Click!
 
I'm fair, could be better. I just don't love driving unless it's on an easy back country road.
The older I get the more I avoid driving at night and on interstates.
Driving back from Gatlinburg, I40 is a twisty and turny highway. Trucks are supposed to stay in the right lane. This means you are passing trucks while the car behind you is pushing you down the road.
At one point, a few of the trucks decided to drive in the left lane. They were big semis passing each other on this winding road!
I thought, "This is not going to be good"
When I got home I saw there was an earthquake right in that area. Can't imagine how that was!
I drove like a champ through there simply so I could live to tell you about it. šŸ˜³
 
I've had a couple of warnings, but never a ticket. Have been hit in the rear end a couple of times, once in stop and go traiffic on the freeway. (He go'ed when he shoulda stopped. ;) ) Was hit once when I was stopped at a red light in downtown Amarillo. The young lady jumped out of her car with her cell phone still in her hand. I had seen that she was going to hit me so I had my brakes on hard. I did not want to be pushed out into that intersection. Had some bruises on the back of my legs from the seat but the car was damaged worse than I was.

(I probably deserved a few speeding tickets, but when I catch myself speeding I slow down. That foot just gets kind of heavy sometimes.)
 
Right now, I'm a competent driver. But when I came out of the hospital/nursing home, I was weak, and unsteady, and I hadn't driven in over a year. I figured if I drove really slow, I'd be OK. I started down a country road @ 30mph. I could keep the car going in a straight line. The speed limit was 55. Cars were passing me by. The drivers behind me were getting frustrated, and taking chances they shouldn't be taking. It dawned me that if I wasn't able to drive at the speed limit, I shouldn't be driving. I think the only way to keep up driving skills is to drive. I do a 2 hour drive and back at least once a month. I understand that someday, I'm not going to be able to drive.
 
It happened last year. I quickly drove into a parking lot and as someone drove out backwards, I took their space. I was only gone 10 minutes and when I came back there was a ticket on my window. I immediately rang the council office to ask what the offence was. He said I was parked "Front to Kerb" and I should have parked "Back to Kerb" , that cost me $330.00, I wrote to the Motor Registry office to appeal as I had never had any had any type of infringement ticket. It did no good.

you falling asleep at the wheel, being overtired or a drowsy feeling. That can be scary.
I have driven when drowsy, not a first choice but still it occurred for one reason or another.

what a blessing~

Our younger years, and things we might have done, we breathe
a sigh of relief now, don't we ;)

Traveling up the Alcan and your experiences, you are welcome
to share those hear if you'd like, we/I will look forward to reading

me too @ hearlady, I look to avoid driving at night lots of the time, and on the
interstates, my eyes are changing, I aim to be more careful.

Glad you lived to tell about it, your story, gosh what a champ is right!

I often time miss threads and posts, as I am not on daily, or at times for stretches,
so not a bore @ Gaer, whatever experiences you would like to share, go for it ;)
 
Driving and cars were never a high point for me. On second thought, maybe only in my 20's when I changed new cars about 3 times in 6 years. Youthful waste of money!

I recall one time speeding and a state trooper pulled me over. First thing out of his mouth was: "where ya going so fast boyyyyyyy?" Typical racist ***! What went through my mind was, don't say anything, accept the ticket and hopefully I would still be breathing.

Like I've said many times on travel threads, I find road trips boring. My driving now in retirement is limited to necessities like to the gym, park and supermarket. I don't like driving at night so avoid it as much as possible. I find it more comfortable on city streets than the highways.
