Would you wear a wig for fashion?

I was just reading a book of Michael Palin's travels in India, where he asks about a cargo ship. By the way his books are as superb as his TV documentaries.

He is told that among other things, the ship carries hair. Apparently Indian hair is greatly prized in Japan. People sell their hair in the temples. For some reason I find that kind of sad. There must be a big trade in it.

I recall a TV series where a mature actress has different wigs all over her dressing room wall, she likes to have a different look each day, for glamour.

So what do you think of wigs as a fashion thing?

Did you know that Joan Collins has never been seen on screen without a wig ?.... she spends hundreds of thousands on them.. The same with Dolly Parton... Dolly said in an interview a few years ago that each wig costs around Ā£30,000 and they all have to be kept in a fridge at a specific temperature.

Some do need a wig when they are undergoing cancer treatment

I do not even wear a hat in the dead of winter, let alone a wig, just to hot on the head.

Ithink the wigs now for people suffering from conditions which cause loss of hair, are a whole load better looking and more affordable than they once were. I have never worn a wig.. nor have I ever had extensions.. ( altho' on this forum I have been accussed of that )... but I do see some beautiful wigs, and if I ever had a reason to wear one, I'm sure I wouldn't mind too much
 
Like @Lee and @hollydolly, I have heard of people wearing wigs after cancer treatment and from hair loss in general.
I do know one thing, I can spot a wig on a person a mile away. There's something about the way they've combed the hair to the front sides of the face (to hide the ears or hair line?) that makes me hone in on that.

Yet I might be wrong, because I haven't gone up to them to ask them if they were wearing a wig or not, lol. :D

Me too.. I can spot them easily.. but I do think that people should take a wig to their hairdresser and get them to style it for them to suit their face... I also think a lot of wigs need to be thinned out a lot.. some look like a cat on people's heads..

I donā€™t find it sad. If someone had to sell their hair that would be different. It could be a decent business if someone has very fast growing hair. Real hair wigs are expensive.

There are many reasons for wearing a wig. Hair loss, whether through health or medical treatments. Some religions require a womanā€™s hair to be covered.

Iā€™d find it hot wearing a wig so hope I donā€™t have to.
 
Wigs serve a purpose for many people. Wearing them for fashion? Sure, why not, if you want to.

Joan Collins has very thin hair and has said publicly many times that she wears wigs because, "My hair is the bane of my existence." Sherri Shepard wears wigs because she hates styling her own hair and enjoys different looks. Some people wear them because it makes their life easier and others wear them just for fun.

I don't need to wear a wig for any reason. However, I have a couple that I've worn for fun. My husband came home from work on Valentine's Day to find a blonde in the kitchen cooking dinner. As we chowed down he kept looking at me, chuckling and said, "It's like having dinner with a different woman." Sometimes a redhead greeted him at the door. I've never worn them out in public and wouldn't like to have to wear one every day because they're hot, not very comfortable, and require care, but they sure can be a lotta fun! šŸ˜ŠšŸ˜‰

Wigs have come a long way since the old days when they looked like hair helmets. Good wigs made with real human hair and natural looking scalps look better than conventional wigs and are very expensive, but a wig is a wig, and you can spot even the best ones.

If you want to wear a wig out in public, for fashion, buy the very best that you can afford and have it styled by a professional.
 
OK, I lied, I HAVE worn wigs in Florida but only for costume purposes.

I had a long (close to waist length) grey wig that I had bought as part of my "World's Oldest Playboy Bunny" Halloween costume for a party years ago.

A couple of years later, we had a "senior prom" costume party honoring those who never got to attend a prom in high school. At that party, I had a short blond bouffant "beehive" wig on to go with my 60's-style prom dress I found at Goodwill.

There was a woman who had been at both parties and I heard her say to her husband, "You wouldn't believe it, but she has long grey hair stuffed up under that wig!" I laughed and told her they were both wigs and showed them my natural short salt-and-pepper hair.
 
Never worn a WIG for fashion. Worn WIG for dance recitals, ballet-jazz in mid to late 70s. By the way, look perfectly horrible with a blonde short wig, it wasn't pretty but I was in the back row. Tore that thing off my head before the paramedics arrived to take me to A&S after I tore a tigh muscle doing the final dance full split if the night's recital. I would never perform again... šŸ˜­

Once after daughter's birth as the massive loss of blood and iron, my hair just broke off once I was home with hubby and new bundle.

Hubby knew what style and colour. While I was under recovery orders from doctors for 6 months, he went out and bought me this beautiful WIG made with real hair.

Having to go out for a compulsory walk with daughter daily, plus hubby protesting that he couldn't do groceries without me, that Wig got mileage. It took me a full 9 months to get my own hair back.

Finally, had the thing cleaned professionally and I gave it away to the local Cancer charity.

Used to have another cheap one for Halloween. However, I gave it away last year after hubby died. As we only celebrate at home, me and daughter, costume's a must but not wig as no one sees us anymore.
 
I see in the news that that Wagner leader's home was raised and among other stuff a number of wigs were found. Apparently he likes wearing disguises - not very good ones.
 
I wore a wig from my grandma once and it was so uncomfortable. It may have been too small. I had a lot more hair then. Maybe if I lose much hair I would try it but not for a fashion statement.

My sister's hair is really thin (maybe from years of drug-abuse, idk) and she owns a few wigs. When she buys one she takes it to this lady who totally re-weaves the front hairline and crown areas of the cap, and also thins the hair out here and there to make the wig look natural.

Other people do this, too, so apparently it's a regular business. My sister's lady also buys wigs, does her thing with them, and resells them for a pretty sweet profit.
