Oatmeal Packaging

Remember making things out of the Quaker Oat containers? They could be painted or covered to make tom-toms or cut out to make doll cradles, among many other things.

Same thing with shoeboxes or cigar boxes. No end of things you could make from them.

Kids today, I think, are missing out on the fun of making stuff from discardables. Toilet paper and paper towel tubes were always handy. My grandpa would always give us his wallpaper books when the new ones came out and we made all sorts of stuff with the big pages. We'd get the tail-end of the rolls, too.

Today, kids get "kits" with everything all cut-to-size and partly assembled. Not much imagination needed.

BRING BACK THE BOXES!!!!!!

I couldn't find the store brand "old fashioned rolled oats". Oops! I was looking for the cylindrical cardboard box in which it used to be contained. They've changed the packaging. Now it's in a resealable plastic bag. Cost-saving measure or an attempt to confuse old ladies?

We can still get Uncle Toby's rolled oats in the cardboard boxes here in Australia.

Cylindrical cardboard boxes of oatmeal haven't been seen in western Canada for 5 or more years. Reason: bags are more cost effective to ship?

When I was 5, me and my kindergarten classmates each made a train engine out of the old Quaker Oats cylinder boxes. That was a really fun project.

Cylindrical Boxes ?... unless the very cheapest brand of oats which are packaged in bags.. most of the oats on sle in the uk are in boxes..

I still see the traditional containers. I usually get mine at Trader Joe's and they have the cylinder container for the ones I buy. Could change of course.

You might want to stick with organic oats. The common practice for harvesting oats now is to spray the oats with weed killer when harvesting to allow earlier and more consistent harvest. Costco has some sprouted organic oats that are priced even cheaper than the non-organic oats.

:oops::mad: But why am I surprised. The Trader Joe's oatmeal I get is organic and I'll be sure I don't slip and get some that isn't.

@Bella I like Bob's Red Mill products. Their creamy wheat is good. No weird ingredients like the store brands.

There was some controversy about this company a number of years ago. But it was talked about on a vegan site so they may have been doing some virtue signaling. I can't remember what the issue was.
