Mini vacation with dog

My husband and I haven't been on a vacation for over 7 years. We kind of hate boarding our 7 yo golden retriever. I am in Florida and we were thinking of a 2 night stay on the beach in a hotel that accepts dogs and near a dog friendly beach. It almost seems like too much trouble and limiting as most places don't want you to leave your pet in the room unattended for any length of time. My grandkids could watch the dog but they already have a hyper puppy and an older dog and no fenced in yard, so I feel like that might be a bit too much for them. They did offer to keep the dog since we watch their dogs all the time so they can go on vacation. We have a huge fenced in yard though. The grandkids are too young to pet sit at our house. The oldest is just 15. My daughter and SIL work a lot so I know the grandkids would be doing all the pet sitting. Well this is my dilemma. I don't know whether to trust the grandkids or just take the dog. So ready for a vacation. Any thoughts or advice?

This may sound silly, but I would do whatever is best for the dog.

If he would be safer and happier with you on vacation, I would take him.
If he would be safer and happier with your grandkids, I would leave him with them.

Wherever the dog would be the safest and happiest 😊

Do what’s best for your dog 😊

Excellent answer!

Our dogs always went with us if we were taking the RV.

If we were going by car and staying in hotels we boarded them in a very good facility. It wasn't cheap but they were family.

Not silly at all. I really don't know which is best. When I go to the grandkids house, the dogs often have an empty water bowl. Makes me mad. But our Sofia doesn't ride well and I am not sure what she would do if we left the hotel room. I am thinking maybe trying one night in a hotel with the dog and one night with the kids. See how it goes.

when we travelled, friends from the "colder" provinces (ie Alberta or Saskatchewan) will dog sit for 2 or more weeks. I refuse to put our dog(s) into a kennel.

This solution suited us and our friends - the dog is home and our friends have a "free" vacation in Vancouver and away from the harsh prairie winters.

I never left my dog in a kennel, he is a labradoodle and my full time shadow. My in-laws who used to watch our dog when we went of vacations years ago, have since passed. We now go on camping trips and take the dog and cat with us in our slide in popup camper.

If I were you, I would take the dog. You'd probably be thinking of the dog the whole time anyway, and I feel you both would be happier. Makes it easy too since there a dog friendly beach. If your dog is not a big barker and has no separation issues, I don't see why leaving him/her in the hotel while you go out to dinner or a show. Good luck, have fun!
