Learning New Things and Being on my Toes

Travelled to Florida a few days ago. Sitting in the hotel lobby writing this. The Allegiant Airline had some hiccups. I usually catch the flight from the small airport 20 minutes from my home (I have used this airport at least 4 times before). The flight was delayed around 45 minutes or so. In addition, at the check-in, I had to have my boarding pass already on my cell phone or else they would charge me five dollars to get the boarding pass for me! This was something new. I was somewhat perturbed that they would resort to coercing the customer to do this task by threatening to charge a 5 dollar fee (this was normally something they did for free). So I left the check-in booth and stood to the side. The people in line were watching me curiously. I guess I entertained them. It wasn't that I didn't have the five dollars, but it was the principle of the thing. I had to download the airline app and look up my passwords to get into my Google account (on my new cell phone - you know, US Cellular, the one where they charged me 50 dollars a month with a 2-year contract that I still do not have a copy of -BTW, I did get it down to 29.99/mth but that's on another thread). As I attempted to get my boarding pass, a young couple came up to me and asked if I needed help. I muttered, "No thanks. This is good for me." I finally accomplished it, and returned to the clerk to show her my boarding pass. She nodded and cheerfully said, "Just letting you know the flight is delayed."

As a result of the 45 minute delay, we arrived at St. Pete airport a few minutes past 6pm (I should have been there 5:20 pm). I called for the shuttle to take me to the Sleep Inn where Easirent has their small office and where I was supposed to get my rental car. No one replied. I called several times. Why didn't they reply? This company and their service had worked smoothly enough in my previous trip a few months ago.

Then I took a taxi to the Sleep Inn (there was a row of taxis on the side where the shuttle usually arrives). On the way to the Sleep Inn, the cab driver said the shuttle always came, but I told him it did not this time. He also cynically said Allegiant had only a 17% on-time rate. I don't know where he got his numbers, because I had flown before, and this was the first time it happened. The cab fare was 20 dollars to go one mile to the Sleep Inn! I had no other option (my family was expecting me that evening, but I didn't want to burden them to come "rescue" me ). At the Sleep Inn, I discover that the Easirent office had already closed at 6pm! I waited there, attempting to see if the lady behind the desk could help. But she shook her head. So I hitched a taxi ride off of another Easirent customer (who dropped off her car - I still haven't figured out how she did it if no one was there) back to the airport. At the airport, I checked around the rental car booths and no one had extras, except for Alamo, which offered a standard SUV. I ended up renting a Mazda SUV from Alamo that cost me twice as much as what the Easirent economy car cost.

It was 8:05 PM when I finished there and went outside to the parking lot to get my SUV. I had never driven an SUV before. The Alamo lady gave me a keyless gadget and told me to pick one of the SUVs. There were five on the lot. Four of them were black and one was a subdued red. I picked the red one. But I had to return to the Alamo lady outside to ask her to show me how to start the car (press the brake and hit the start button in the car). I had brought my Garmin GPS gadget and she showed me how to hook it up. I forgot to ask her how to adjust the mirrors after she left, etc. I was racing against the clock because I still had a half hour to drive to my hotel and I didn't want to drive in the dark (It gets dark around 8:45pm). It was 8:15 PM when I drove off with the SUV and entered US 19, I could hear the cars zipping around me, but I couldn't see them because the mirrors were way out there (who could even see through them?). Long story short, I stopped to pick up a hamburger (I was starving by now) before arriving at the hotel at 9:15pm.

All this from someone who spent at least 90% of her time in her home since Covid. There was a little thrill doing this, though. Each task I accomplished felt good.

Overall thoughts, because of the inefficiency of the airline, and the failure to communicate by the rental company, it cost me over 400 dollars more to rent the SUV.

The whole idea for the trip was to come celebrate my mom's birthday. In those instances, where things did not happen as anticipated, that is when it helps to have a few extra bucks handy. Granted, I would have preferred to use that money for other things, but God had other plans for me.

Have you ever had "hiccups" in your travel plans, and if so, how did you handle them?

Oh my, that was surely a trip to remember. So sorry to hear you had so much trouble and things not going the way they were supposed to go. As far as travel hiccups go... we've had car trouble on long road trips a few times (one quite severe) but besides that, the only thing I'd consider "big" was having to deal with hurricane and tornado warnings while traveling.

On the positive side of things, I'm betting your Mama was thrilled that you were able to celebrate her birthday with her!

And a Vacation is supposed to be relaxing.... sheesh.. this is precisely the type of story which has put me off flying since pre covid
You and me both, I almost had to go and have a lay down, and to think that my wife and I have crossed the pond at least fifty times, but our journey's were all pre-technology. To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer.

Hope your Mom had a wonderful Happy Birthday! I'm glade everything worked out for you. Nothing worse than starting out with delays, especially if you end up leaving later in the day.

My dream vacation (at that time) was 25 years ago & started to go downhill when we left late from the local airport heading to Europe which created missed flights, using different than intended airlines & resulted in lost luggage. If I have to have problems, much better to deal with the in the U.S.

Hope I can take things in stride as you did!

Thanks for sharing, @CallMeKate ! I agree with you about the hurricane and tornado warnings! One year, we drove an extra hour away to avoid a hurricane. Yes, my Mom is thrilled that I came down for her birthday!

Many, many times. And I "handled" them no better than you did.

You might try a letter to Easirent sometimes that can work to get a refund or future credit. Sometimes not, I don't know Easirent.

Tell Mama happy birthday for me!
Thanks, @Alligatorob for the suggestion! I wrote a letter to their customer service explaining the ordeal I went through. Also, many thanks for the well wishes for my Mom's birthday!

I had forgotten about these things! In my youth, I had plenty of opportunities to sleep overnight at airports because of delays! But now that I'm down here, am enjoying family, so I think it was worth it!

Yes, indeed and in my everyday plans too. Sometimes tech can be a real pain. I won't fly anymore unless there just isn't another way to get there on time. I've always enjoyed road trips.
Yes, I did enjoy road trips in the past but because of my neck issues, I can't drive for long hours. The other option was an Amtrak auto train but I would still need to drive two hours to get to the train station and two hours to get to my destination.

Whew! That was quite a trip! You handled everything that was thrown at you very well. I hope you enjoyed your time with mom and that she had a very happy birthday. 🙂
Thank you for the well wishes, @Bella! My mom is happy that I came for her birthday! Am enjoying family time with her and extended family.

Thanks @Lilac for sharing your trip to Europe with us! I can only imagine what you went through! I agree with you about dealing with the U.S. as compared to other countries.

Oh my, what a trip you had! I hope the worst is over. I hope your Mom has a very happy birthday now that she can spend it with her daughter.

Yes, I have had some hiccups in travel plans in the past. Have gotten snowed in at airports several times, usually Philly. The airlines would put everyone up in a hotel there and free dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant. So not so bad. I haven't traveled in many years now.

Enjoy your trip!

It's nice that the airlines set you up in a hotel, etc. The last time I traveled to Europe was in 2019, so it's been a few years for me, too. Thanks for the well wishes for my Mom, @katlupe !

I still have my home down there in Pinellas County. We will be going down in about a month. It’s been for sale for about 3 or more years. I have it overpriced because I’m not anxious to sell it. There is no sign in the yard by my request.

I never flew a plane into PIE, but I did fly Allegiant in there. Small airport, but easy to navigate through. I always have my rental car reserved and mostly use Enterprise. They aren’t the cheapest, but very dependable. My car has always been there and waiting.

I would only remind you to obey the traffic laws. I learned that through experience. I can also tell you regardless of what you read, Pinellas County has had their share of crime. If traveling alone, avoid strangers, both male and females. The beaches are great for a lot of water sports, but I would avoid them after sundown. Clearwater Beach has a celebration of the sunset each evening on Pier 60 where area vendors display their wares on the Pier.

Clearwater Beach is more of a party beach. If you go about 2 miles past the beach on Route 60 and go over the bridge that separates the Bay from the Gulf, you will come to Sand Key, which is my favorite beach. My home is just up the road from there.

Take a moment to read this article and you will learn why I say to avoid strangers.

Wow! I know the Tampa/St Pete area has a long and sordid history of this kind of thing. One I remember well from the 60s involved finding a severed head in a local gas station, I think the head of the owner's girlfriend but I could be wrong. Other parts were found spread about the area. Wish I could remember the name... I do remember the joke, "Ever read how to get ahead in the gas station business by xxx?".
