It didn't know who I was. Hardest thing I've ever gone through.

7) I used to go scuba diving every chance I got and it was stressed that you always dive with a "buddy". My most frequent scuba buddy asked me to work with him doing Underwater Search Salvage and Rescue, so I joined his team. We mostly searched for small boats that sunk shallow waters and cars that were accidentally driven into rivers and deep channels, and the only things we salvaged were identifying objects, like a stamped life preserver, or a VIN, or a license plate. By the time our team arrived, survivors had already been picked up by a rescue boat or managed to swim to the shore, so there was never a Rescue involved.

(still #7) The 3rd time I spotted a deceased person, it was a little girl. She was only 18-months old and didn't know how to get out of her car-seat. She probably couldn't swim, anyway. My job was to tag her tiny wrist with an underwater glow-band so the recovery guys could find her. River waters are always pretty murky, and I'm glad I couldn't see her face - she'd been down there over 24-hours, and water can really do a number on a body after a while.

8) I quit working with a volunteer Underwater Search Salvage and Recovery crew after having to tag a drowned child.

9) I feed homeless cats and build little shelters for them.

10) I was a licensed foster parent through CPS for a little over 4 years. I lived in a 1-br apartment so, by law, I could only take one child at a time, and they had to be under the age of 2 at the time of placement. I've been a foster-dad to a total of 3 little ones. When it was time to renew my license about a year ago, I didn't.

But I highly recommend becoming a senior-aged foster parent! It gives new purpose to your life. It makes you feel young and keeps you mentally sharp, and your age and experience is a huge benefit to temporarily displaced children.
