Where did this basic message about crossing the street go? I’m shocked at the numbers of people who just charge across an intersection or crosswalk without checking. Yes, they have the right away but that can mean dead right. When driving you have to watch anyone near a crossing in case they suddenly make an abrupt crossing. A car can’t stop on a dime.

While walking with my DIL, I stopped at the intersection, looked around and listened. She was shocked by this and said she just automatically crossed.

The most dangerous approach for a driver is near the light activated crossing at high schools. The teens push the button and just step out. This also happens with adults in other crossing where they can automatically activate the flashing lights.

Many cyclists will ride straight across a pedestrian crosswalk. They can be even harder to avoid. They don’t realize that bike is considered a vehicle and they aren’t pedestrians.

During the day, it's easy to see pedestrians crossing the street (especially if you're driving carefully), but at night, that's another story. If I remember right, many pedestrian deaths occur in the evening where visibility is poor.

I’m very cautious around stoplights for all the above reasons. Some drivers don’t feel the need to indicate which way they are turning, some kids figure road rules are for everyone else. While at intersections I think about what’s the worse thing that the driver could do and proceed from there. It’s a practice from my biking days since you had to be proactive

I remember the Green Cross Code Man as a child. And the badges we wore at school with green crosses after being taught how to safely cross a road. It seemed Like a yearly school campaign at the time

Always stop look & listen. Parking lots are another place. With electric cars there is no sound looking is needed.
Then there is the lost in space while on their cell phone nothing exists except their right to cross, or walk without paying attention to what is around them.

I stepped out
and He gunned it

Alway look left/right and left again.... it will be the opposite in the US and Canada... it's entirely ingrained since childhood . ...and I still do it when I'm on the pedestrian crossing, because cars have been known not to stop...

this is a sad lesson in we do not believe or follow rules of road or laws ...... the pedestrian has to become part ninja to avoid cars and such that are suppose to stop.
While yes i look several times before I cross i wish the local police would do one of the stings they used to to check on who stopped for pedestrians.
while visiting my son and DIL in another state i used cross walk walked normally when they said people do not stop and you need to run to cross to a park ........... NOT me i looked drivers right in eye and yelled " I am walking here "

had a cheering section in park as first time they saw cars have a complete STOP in that area...... Son was embarrassed i think but i have been known to do something like this to remind others I am too old for this sh*t .

Pedestrians have the right of way in the UK..as soon as they step onto the road. Pretty annoying sometimes when someone just walks out right in front of you, looking at their phone, and we have to do an emergency stop...

I think there is disregard on parts of both vehicles and pedestrians and yes people who are walking should put the phone in a pocket and be alert

a co-worker accidentally killed two people who mid block not in crosswalk ran out between two parked cars by time they saw it was too late.

Apparently the same rules apply in San Francisco's China-town district....almost got run over by a car on the sidewalk.

Yes, I do, but too many others don't. People are in a hurry and are often oblivious, distracted, and self-absorbed instead of paying attention to what's going on around them. They have no consideration for others and feel entitled because the world revolves around them. All you can do to protect yourself and others is to be present in the moment, focus, keep your head up, keep your eyes peeled, and keep your ears open so you don't end up as a statistic.
