New to dentures - best choice of fixative?

In late fall 2021 was diagnosed with a squamous-cell carcinoma (base of my tongue, swollen lymph glands one side of my neck). I went into seven weeks of radiation treatment, with two infusions of light chemo, in early 2022. Treatment was successful. But the situation involved prescribed tooth extractions before the treatment started, and several teeth becoming loose as a treatment after-effect.

Suffice to say, my dentist recommended extraction of the rest of my lower teeth, and I understood his judgment. My mouth had been mapped by the denturist and, on the day of the extractions, an interim denture was placed in my mouth. The next day, I went to the denturest and he touched-up the fit of the denture. Three weeks later, another touch-up.

I was told one week after this that it would be okay to start using a fixative. Prior to starting that, the interim denture was useless for chewing. I chose Scope Fixodent Plus. It works okay with a meal, as long as I've cleaned & dried the denture and used the Fixodent just prior to eating. Otherwise this "interim" denture comes loose. (!!)

My denturist is on vacation for a few more days, and I've got a call into his office about when I can be fitted for the permanent denture I've already prepaid for. But what I'd like to learn from people here is: what brand of denture fixative have you decided works best?

I'm in a similar situation....had my old teeth pulled about 6 weeks ago, and using "temporary" dentures now. It will be another couple of months before I get my permanent dentures. The swelling of the gums has receded, and the dentures come loose easily. I started using a small "dot" of Polygrip "free" (no Zink), and that seems to allow me to eat a lot better...without the dentures flopping loose.

Until I got my implants, nothing would keep my lowers in. I tried several brands and none would hold them in longer than 1 meal. After I ate I had to reapply the adhesive or they would just flop around.

I used adhesive for about a year before my implants and I found out that washing off the adhesive in the sink eventually clogged up my drain. I finally started wiping off as much adhesive as possible before cleaning in the sink.

Interesting Don, thanks. I'll try that.

They used to show those guys eating corn-on-the-cob with their dentures on TV commercials. Of course, we all know commercials often present fantasies (or rare possible cases). LOL It would be nice, though.

Fixodent, I have been using it for years, I had
an accident and lost several teeth, I can bite
tough meat and they stay in place.

This was the first denture glue.

Mike.

I have full dentures top and bottom.
Tried several brands and didn't like any of them.
All that goop was hard to clean from my mouth and dentures.

"Bit" the bullet and got implants for snap in dentures. Was expensive but worth every penny.
Life is so much easier and meals more enjoyable. And no funny goop taste.
Smiling, talking ... cleaning, everything is easier and more natural.

I still can't bite an apple or eat corn on the cob but some can. Depends on several things.

I've been on both upper and lower partial dentures and for the first few months' wear I struggled with an adjustment of the dentures. I used to have good teeth until in my mid 60's. However, after I lost one tooth and came after another tooth and more teeth like 'domino-effect' to fall off that ended up needing to wear 'partial dentures.' So far so good, both of dentures stay pretty well except chewing and eating hard-foods, i.e. nuts, hard-meats and the likes.
I use 'POLIGRIP/Power Max' which I apply on both before the breakfast. Also, I use SEABOND/#1 Denture Adhesive Seals' when I go to a friend's house or any public places because in my precaution, I can not afford my Dentures getting loose in the public places. It really works well, but I need to cut some to fit well with the dentures. I purchased both from Amazon.

Along with the advice of others who've responded, I wanted to thank you, Amanda, for the time you took to reply. I've switched to Polygrip, and for me it's a big improvement over Fixodent! I now want to ask you why you use the Polygrip usually, and Seabond on more special occasions. Is it because using the Seabond seals daily would work out to being more expensive?

I use Polygrip every morning before breakfast and last all day long until the bedtime. However it does not last when I eat hard-to-eat, i.e. steak, apple and the like. Otherwise, Polygrip hold my partial dentures, both upper and lower dentures practically all day long. I apply Poligrip very generously all around the dentures, from top to bottom of dentures using small-tip of Poligrip.
As to Seabond, I use when I go to the public places, i.e. meetings and friend's house to eat dinner that happens not often tho'. I'm very careful making sure my partial dentures secure and comfortable using Seabond along with Poligrip for double protection and comfortsblre wearing partial dentures.
I keep both Polygrip and Seabond in my cupboard in the kitchen for easy reach.
