Perth has a suburb called Cockburn - pronounced Coburn

COCKBURN Name Meaning
Scottish (Midlothian) and northern English: habitational name from a place
in Berwickshire named Cockburn, from Old English cocc 'cock, rooster
(or the related byname Cocca) + burna 'stream' (see Bourne )
.
This surname is traditionally pronounced Coburn.

Mike.

A high school girl named Sam in the movie, Bandslam, decided to spell her name SA4M, while claiming the 4 was silent. A remarkably insightful way for Hollywood to point out the insanity of the English language.

We should just get rid of all this "silent letters" stuff in English, and just learn to spell properly.

We might then lose the English language history. Its influences from other languages, from the peoples who invaded England and occupied it. The historical development of the English language, the way in which some sounds change over the centuries.

We would lose all that wonderful etymology and might lose a sense of where we come from. Perhaps Noah Webster has a lot to answer for?

Without the invasions of England, we wouldn't have a use for a thesaurus. And who would want to be without one of them? Different words for the same thing, coming from the invading languages.

That was a fun watch. I usually don't make it all the way through a longer Utube link.

Well, if the people, who live in Cockburn, don't like the name as it is spelled, they can change it. Until then, tourists and visitors are going to call it Cockburn, and not Coburn. If locals call Cockburn, Flugenheinmerville, it's still "Cockburn" that's written on the signs.
