The truth about ultra-processed foods

A 'tidal wave of harm' will hit the UK due to Brits' high ultra-processed food diet, experts warned today.

The alert follows two studies which found that people who consume lots of mass-produced foods have a 24 per cent higher risk of suffering a heart attack and a 39 per cent increased chance of having dangerously high blood pressure.

Campaigners called the findings, from researchers in Australia and China, the strongest evidence yet that eating ultra-processed foods is deadly.

However, scientists are divided.

A swathe of studies have pointed to ultra-processed foods' high-calorie, salt, sugar and fat content, as well as factors such as a lack of exercise, as the real culprit behind the health risks linked with the foods — rather than how they are made.

Ultra-processed foods are those that have ingredients that wouldn't be found in a kitchen cupboard, such as preservatives, sweeteners and artificial colours, and typically have a longer shelf life than fresh alternatives.

Some examples include ice cream, mass-produced bread, flavoured yogurts, soft drinks, breakfast cereals and ready meals or fast food.

However, British experts have urged Brits not to panic over the new findings.

Professor Gunter Kuhnle, an expert in nutrition and food science at the University of Reading, said the studies, like others before them, fail to pinpoint ultra-processed food as the culprit.

'We already know that a dietary pattern with high ultra-processed foods increases the risk for some diseases — but that doesn’t mean that it is the ultra-processed foods that drives the association,' he said.

I make it a point to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Salad and with every dinner, usually contains Kale and an olive oil dressing. Breakfast consists of a fortified high fiber (no sugar) cereal, five or six Almonds, a Brazil Nut, Blueberries, Strawberries, and some Milk (Calcium). Every cup of coffee also gets Milk. Later in the day a peach, grapes, or an apple.

Not so sweet in the UK...plus you can buy them with low sugar and low salt... , I've been told our baked beans taste completely different to those in the USA
They’re different in Canada too. I have bought the Heinz British and ours and they taste the same. They used to be called Pork and Beans and now there are very few of that type on the shelves.

I know of some people that live near the Can/US border who make trips just to pick up cases and a few other products we have. We do the same for some of their products.

It's been known for years that a diet high in processed foods is a major contributor to Metabolic Syndrome .
Metabolic syndrome includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar,Type 2 Diabetes, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels. The syndrome increases a person's risk for heart attack and stroke.

..and yet more people than ever are addicted to ultra processed foods...

how ?... about what ?.. about eating too much processed foods?... the people who tend to eat those foods, are those who wouldn't be interested in learning how to eat more healthily... we are the Fat. man of Europe now..
The only way How is to put immense pressure on the people who run your health care system and all your elected officials. But when all those people weigh the cost of treating health issues caused by those foods versus the financial benefits of allowing the food industry to keep using the culprit ingredients, they may decide to ignore you for another couple decades or so - after all their grandkids earn prestigious college degrees, all their wives hit their limit on Botox / husbands hair transplants finally prove successful (or whatever), and all their sons, daughters, nieces and nephews are set for life in their new careers.

So, yeah, at least a couple decades (and countless deaths from heart attacks, brain aneurysms, and liver failure).

Just hang in there.

Exactly, so.... :(

Added sugar, sodium and saturated fat / trans fat contribute to a person's health decline in ways that genetics alone never would.

Day before yesterday: was talking to my 97 yr. old uncle, one of my few living relatives. A some point he mentioned how he normally avoided eating sugary treats, as it would cause an increase in his pain. He said that sugar contributed to inflammation, which in turn is a large factor in many illnesses. I was impressed, and proud that he was aware of these medical facts, but then- he's 97. ;)

I clicked on the link to read the full article. Most of it is (now) common sense and well understood. Avoid fried foods, soda, chips, most frozen meals, and all other categories of junk food. Small amounts of oil are probably ok, but drenching a salad in olive oil? Not so smart.

Is anyone really surprised to learn carrots are a healthier choice than carrot cake, and apples are better for our bodies than apple flavored jelly beans?

Agree fully.

Heinz may be the world's best known producer of baked beans, but my OH and I never touch them as they always seem to have too much of a vinegary taste. We prefer a supermarket own brand with reduced sugar -- and no aspartame or other artificial sweeteners making up the difference
