It's everywhere! :)

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s become a stink at the U.S. Open: a pungent marijuana smell that wafted over an outer court, clouded the concentration of one of the world’s top players and left the impression there’s no place left to escape the unofficial scent of the city.

While the exact source of the smell remained a mystery Tuesday, one thing was clear: Court 17, where eighth-seeded Maria Sakkari complained about an overwhelming whiff of pot during her first-round loss, has become notorious among players in recent years for its distinctive, unmistakable odor.

“Court 17 definitely smells like Snoop Dogg’s living room,” said Alexander Zverev, the tournament’s 12th-seeded man who won his opening match on the court Tuesday. “Oh my God, it’s everywhere. The whole court smells like weed.”

Stung by stories in the wake of Sakkari’s match Monday that made it appear the U.S. Open’s stands are the sporting equivalent of a Phish concert, the United States Tennis Association conducted its own investigation, of sorts, to weed out the source of the smell.

The smell of pot is everywhere, all the time, in NYC. Feels weird walking my grandson around, but he doesn't notice, will grow up with this smell in the air. If he asks, I'll answer, but he doesn't, so I won't. YET.
I think it would be the same here on the Boardwalk in Venice, California. But, we get a strong onshore sea breeze all day. The only place you can really smell it is next to the Los Angeles Police Departments sub-station located just off the Boardwalk. LOL

A few weeks ago, we stayed overnight at a casino in Kansas City that allows smoking in the rooms. When we got ready to leave the next morning, and stepped out into the hallway, there was a strong smell like a Skunk. If that's what smoking MJ smells like, I would never want to try that stuff.

I don’t understand why people are smoking it any time of day. If I wanted to relax with a glass of wine at 8 in the morning, people would think that I had a problem and they’d be right.
They have a bunch of bars and grills opening at 10:30am. I am sure that many watching the matches have "partaken". :)

What is the difference between having alcoholic beverages and smoking joints? I do neither but it would seem like the results would be the same depending on "how much"?
Some folks hate to admit it but it seems to be a generational thing.

People smoked cigerattes any time of the day, right. Truth be told, nicotine is a drug. And who cares what people think, anyway?
Re the OP: I live in the city and I haven't smelled it in the air. My upstairs neighbor talks about the boy across the hall from him smoking "that stuff" but I haven't smelled that either. I have heard that pot doesn't smell the same as it used to.

At one place I worked, they were rehabbing the floor above us. I kept smelling pot twice a day and noticed I'd smell it when I couldn't hear the work going on.

I realized that the crew above were taking breaks and obviously indulging in a little "recreational" inhaling.

At another office, I kept getting whiffs of pot. It turned out to be a co-worker's perfume. We tested it on a couple other people, including me, and it smelled fine. On her, it smelled like pot. Perfume reacts differently on people. Not usually THAT differently, though.

Given that in Canada you can't smoke anything in a work place, this isn't a big problem here. I was amazed to read a post in this thread that mentioned a US hotel that allowed smoking in it's rooms ??? Not happening in Canada, and most hotels warn visitors that IF they do smoke anything in their room, there will be a $300 fee added to the daily room rate, to cover the cost of cleaning that room before it can be used by any other guests.

In my part of west Toronto, there are marijuana retail stores everywhere. In public venues, like a Blue Jays game, no one is going to be smoking anything, or they will be told to leave the stadium by the security staff. Old joke......How do you get all of the Canadians out of the pool in the evening ? Ask them nicely, to leave. Jim B.

This is just one place where in NY and especially NYC where pot smells are the dominate odor in the air. So bad residents and tourists are complaining.

NYC’s disgusting pot stench is keeping tourists away

Apparently "legalization" was given enthusiastic support by NY politicians because they saw tax dollars from legal shops. But the illegal dealers saw a chance to expand their business. And the dopers some how think they are above cigarette smokers smoking anywhere and every where.

*Note this is one reason I posted in current events because pot odors are again an issue NYC especially.

Oddly, New York is the only state that has legalized recreational weed, and allowed it to be smoked most anywhere in public. Everywhere else as first steps in legalization, where a person may do so is limited even more than cigarette smoke. Here in California that is only in private residences or at special events that acquire permission. Otherwise a potential $100 misdemeanor whether or not any local government jurisdictions actually bother unless someone complains. I'll be interested in reading how those that wrote the NY legislation managed to stupidly do so.

Many have been hoping to be able to eventually smoke weed discretely outdoors where such doesn't bother or annoy others, while the New York City problems are only likely to result in a repressive legislation amendment and general crackdown making such even more unlikely in other states. Those opposing weed use generally have been frustrated since states began to allow recreational use as there have been few negatives for them to point to in order to slow that tide. One might almost expect those against such in NYC purposely did so expecting the general selfish, in your face, attitudes of many in that city to play out so there just as it has.

It would be easy for governments to allow use in locations where smoking outdoors in public won't annoy others. Even in dense cities like San Francisco, about breezy locations. The notion of some selfish pinheads that smoking anything, weed, cigarettes, pipe tobacco, cigars, or whatever should be allowed anywhere, will never fly among reasonable minds and is only counterproductive towards acceptable future policy.

That's the thing. Where they are smoking now violates cigarette smoking laws that includes public spaces. The dopers and dealers think 'everything' is legal now. Dealers have to be licensed by the state and smokers have to abide by no smoking laws.

Contrary to popular belief skunk smells are a stench.

I smelled pot while driving all over town yesterday, and it wasn't me. :giggle:

Saw some kid place his roach on the ledge outside of the gas station while he pumped gas.
I hollered out the window that it smelled good, and he gave me a (y) , as I slowly drove away.

I am a Canadian and I travel a lot. I love our hotel laws (Big Fine if you smoke in a hotel/motel room). Yes, I live in the middle of the country and there are "Cannabilis" Stores on almost every block. I am on the 8th floor and I can see one across the street. It appears to be very busy with customers in the evening that look very much like this:
No time for a shave and no time for a bath but tons of time to smoke a joint! Go Figure!
