Mohamed Al Fayed, has died age 94

The father of Dodi Fayed who was Princess Dianas' boyfriend at the time of her death, and died alongside her ...has died almost exactly to the day his son died 26 years ago..

Dodi died on the 31st of August 1997, and Mohamed has died just one day later, on the 1st September 2023.. still grieving his eldest son

The self-made billionaire owned Harrods Department store London and Fulham FC, London

He was born in Alexandria in 1929 and moved to the UK in the 1960s, becoming an early driving force in the development of Dubai, and he later bought House of Fraser, including Harrods, with his brothers, as well as the Ritz hotel in Paris, which he owned up until his death.

A funeral service was held at London Central Mosque in Regents Park on Friday - following Islamic conventions to bury the dead as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours.

He was then buried at Barrow Green Court, his 17th century country pile, in Oxted, Surrey, at the family mausoleum next to son Dodi.

I's gone to bed after hearing there had been an accident.. which was about 1am our time... then when I got up in the morning, all the major tv stations had either shut down and were just showing the Union flaf.. or were showing round the clock news... Dodi was dead, Diana had died at 4am .

The day of her funeral, she was due to pass in the Funeral Car along the nearby motorway on the wy up to her childhood home .....so we went over there and stood with the crowd just as the funeral cortège came past us slowly.. and was completely covered in flowers..

The very sad thing was, that according to their religion, Al Fayed had his son cremated the very next day... but at Dianas' funeral, the Royal family didn't even acknowledge him, or the loss of his son...
 
This brings back memories of that dreadful time of the crash that killed Diana. What timing that he dies so close to the date of Diana's death!

I remember reading the book written by the bodyguard, Trevor Rees Jones, sole survivor of the crash. He suffered truly dreadful injuries and very bravely recovered after many operations. The inside story of life as Dodi Fayed's bodyguard, observing the behaviours of people in and around that family was fascinating.

What came across was that Al Fayed was a nasty character. It has always puzzled me why he was never granted British citizenship?
Can it be imagined if Diana had married Dodi?
However, I believe it WAS an accident, so did Trevor Rees Jones in his book, which I recall was an honest sincere account - though he, understandably, had no memory of the actual crash.
I would love to read his book again but it is not on kindle and is far too expensive from Amazon sellers for old copies. Maybe I have it in my bookshelves somewhere. Did anyone read it?

It is on eBay for 3 quid (several), which is more than I would pay for the other two.

Exactly what made you believe Al Fayed was a ''nasty Character''.. ?

He applied at least twice for a British passport in the 1990’s, but it was said he failed to pass the "good character" test required by the Home Office at the time, being declared unfit for a passport. I think there was some doubt of who his parents were. I don’t think it was entirely clear whether he was born in 1929 or 1933? His early history is debatable, including where he got his early money from. There were calls to the British government to investigate the family.

There was some alleged dodgy past business dealings. There was also the "cash for questions" thing where he made cash payments in brown envelopes to British Members of Parliament, to illegally ask questions in Parliament on his or Harrods behalf.

There were allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour made against him. Former Harrods employees came forward sharing their experiences of harassment on an ITV 1990’s documentary called "The Big Story." The allegations included inappropriate touching, groping, and unwelcome advances from him. Allegedly including chasing women around his office as he shoved money up their bras.

One woman sued him for sexual harassment, bullying and discrimination and was made an offer of £60,000, which she accepted. There was also rape allegations made by other’s.

Some female employees were asked to take a medical test for sexually transmitted diseases. Some of them, perhaps the more pretty ones, were then invited to parties. He was accused of indecent assault against a 15-year-old girl, which he denied. As sad as it is to hear that someone has died, I can’t help thinking that some might think the world is a slightly better place without him.

Not exactly a glowing reputation!
 
I was driving in my car when Princess Diana's death was announced. I lived in the IS at the time, and was on a long drive for business. David Bowie's album, Reality, had come out a little while earlier, and it was my go-to CD in the car. I attended the firework display in Hyde Park for the marriage. I like the Royal Family, and I think they represent the British like nothing else. But I will never accept Lady Camilla. It must be true love, that's all I can say.
