What do you think happens after Death?

The older I get the more I wonder what happens after you die. Do you come back to a new life or do you just disappear from any kind of life?
What do you believe happens

All bodily functions stop, including your consciousness, which exists totally dependent on your brain. Basically, you're done. All the atoms that are you at the time of your death go back into the universe where they become available as building blocks for different compounds. Atoms are remarkably durable. That's all that will endure, while your body and mind, are fleeting. Enjoy life now. It's not going to get any better... or worse.

I am blessed with a few dozen Greek virgins and wine flowing from fountains.

Actually, you end up back at the spiritual roulette table. Next life you could win an Eagle marionette puppet.

According to the bible, we live once, and then the judgement. Hebrews 9:27 states: "And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment . . ."
And John 3:16 states "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life."
And all of our good works are not enough to allow us to stand in the judgement, and in comparison to God's holiness, they are filthy rags as stated in Isaiah 64:6. We must rely on the saving work of Jesus on the cross.
That is what the bible states, and I believe it.

People talk about the soul. The spirit. To me, that’s what is meant by *I*. I am not my body.

People say “when I die.” I say “when my body dies”

I believe that *I* animate this meat body, this flesh, this bunch of cells and organs and flesh. It will eventually fail me because bodies are impermanent. Souls, spirits, essences are not.

I am not my body. I inhabit a body which will eventually fail. When it does I will inhabit another body.

I am not my body either. To me, my body is merely the vehicle I was granted to fulfill this earthy life. It’s not who I am. For many reasons I can’t possibly explain, nor want to, I believe energy doesn’t die; it transforms and we keep existing. I know I will see loved ones again including my pets. Others may feel differently and I’m ok with that.

That's when the real party starts.

Think about it, when you're born into this world you come into it screaming, but whoa but awaits you! What a change it is from the womb into this world. I think the same thing happens on an even grander scale when you pass from this world into the next.

How hopeless it is to think this is all there is, with the crime, hatred and shallow, self serving people. No, it doesn't take much to realize there is so, so much more.

I truly feel bad for those that think this is all there is.

Pardon the long answer, but it's not an easy question.
The energy that is in your body goes on, although perhaps changed from chemical to thermal if you are cremated. (It can never be created or destroyed). If not cremated, it will become part of nature again, and the molecules in your body will become part of many things. If you look out at nature, everything there has died millions of times over, and yet it is still there. It's just recycled, as you will be.

As for your consciousness, that is a question no one has an answer to. The reductionists believe that everything that happens in the mind is the result of the brain, but that theory runs up against a major problem. The "hard consciousness" problem that has been debated for hundreds of years with no winning answer. You simply can't explain consciousness convincingly, and the "felt feelings" by neuronal connections, and therefore cannot be reduced to brain cells and be purely physical. Over 60% of philosophers agree that the hard problem is real.

The alternative is that there is more to consciousness than physical elements. If that is the case, then it opens one up to the possibility that there is a universal consciousness (cosmic consciousness), that exists, and we are just a tiny part of that consciousness.

Think of it this way. A person with Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personality Disorder) has just one consciousness, but has multiple identities within that consciousness, and those identities can be vastly different from each other. A universal consciousness could be very similar with multitudes of identities that are all part of a larger one. If that were the case, perhaps your identity would continue on without the body, or some other possibility. It's something to think about.

Well, that saved me some keystrokes
Thank you, brother

There may be many theories, but we will never know. I am sure there have been near death experiences, but not actual death and someone came back.

I've always felt that its like you sleep, not dreaming and you don't wake up. Almost like when you are under anesthesia. Some are under the assumption the body dies but the soul lives on?? Does the soul go into another human body? Once that body dies - does the cycle continue?? I think this is one of the reasons people fear death - because of the unknown. I know it was for me. But I'm way less fearful than I use to be.

Have tersely mentioned this before. I speculate that what we are as mammalian earth creatures with a nervous system, notochord, and brain, is not the flesh, blood, cells, and bones of our organic bodies, but rather the complex electromagnetic brain wave field within the impedance containers of our brains. All Earth notochord animals small to large (but not plants) have such brain waves. The brains of earth animals create internal representations of their external sensed worlds. It is within those representations that brain waves oscillate. With humans there is body map cortical homunculus:

Cortical homunculus - Wikipedia

That is a neural 2D map like representation of our body parts based on amount of use on the surface of our cerebral motor cortex that those fields constantly access against as we feel perceptual awareness in our own bodies. There is also a 2D like map for what our eyes "see" in the occipital lobe that is not a 1 to 1 match of the eye rods and cones but rather an internal visual simulation.

So theoretically, if the impedances of our brain electromagnetic fields could somehow be non-organically duplicated then your mind according to my speculation might possibly be duplicated by creating a non-organic container from that. That is something an ancient ultimate intelligent entity would have enormous reason to if possible solve and design in a universe with organic life like we find ourselves. One could argue that would be the greatest gift in an organic universe. From that line of thinking, your dog could also be likewise saved as could that of an ant.

Religiously, I don't believe in magic like miracle actions without forces that dominate Christian religious dogmas. Thus no omnipotent omniscient entity that can perform anything imaginable. A way to save otherwise eternally dead and gone organic brain lives of organic entities. That is what I hope with faith that Jesus offered. Just as Paul repeatedly relates in the Book of Romans, organic humans that don't believe Jesus was who he said he was and follow his moral path otherwise are not saved, dying forever into non-existence. Dust to dust.

I’ll be going on to The Great Gig In The Sky, where Pink Floyd will be performing for the newly dead. It will all be very awesome, peaceful, and psychedelic…

and boy, does this bird have some great pipes!

I didn't understand a word she said, but I could listen to her holler all night.

I think our consciousness is eternal, that our bodies die but our conscious souls do not, that there is a spirit dimension which is our true home and from which we incarnate into the material world to learn lessons available here via our choices and free will.
I think there is a vast entity that we crudely call God which is so vast and wise that it is beyond our frame of reference to understand except superficially. I think that all of our consciousnesses are somehow connected to each other and also to the God entity, yet we are paradoxically also localized, individual beings.
I think that the after death journey is probably going to be interesting and exciting......and that there are beings more highly developed than we are, who know us and who will urge us to consider a review of the lives we've led here in this material world, with a view to consider the future direction of our journey.

JC did some poor sod marry her? Planet Earth kicked off 4,543,000,000 years ago and with luck, we of no importance other than wrecking it might live for 80 of them. Then we are drinking the same elements of water that were formed at the time of the Big Bang and as human body is mainly water the elements of which have been here forever as they are indestructible, the next poor sod will be drinking us.
That must make me eternal, I have flowed down the River Nile and splashed in the bath with Cleopatra, travelled the oceans of the world, been over Niagara Falls, and fallen as snow on Mount Everest.
