Want to learn French…. Suggestions for best program or strategy?

I’ve always wanted to speak (and read/understand spoken) French. With so many choices in programs and courses, anyone have good experiences from which they can recommend one that is effective and not too pricey?

Merci!

Remember that French is one of the 2 official languages here in Canada, so we have lots of free language training programs. Many Canadian parents send their kids to French Immersion language schools, starting at age 7 . Of the 40 million people in Canada, about 22 percent are French speakers with French as their first language learned at home, before attending school.

Once you have started learning the language, listening to CBC French language radio broadcasts online will be helpful to get the flow of the conversation. There is a difference between the way that people in France pronounce certain words and the way that Quebecers speak to each other.

Jim's advice is much the same when I learned French. Repeating verbs, as we did at school, gets you nowhere, but whilst a student with long summer breaks, I went grape picking in France. Three summers later and I had learned enough to get by on. You know that you have mastered the language when you can think in it.

Thank you so much, @jimintoronto !

You are welcome. One of the things that Americans remark about when they visit my country is that all of the packaging is in both languages, and of course so are our currencies, both coins and bills. The Canadian Federal Government operates in both languages, and in Parliament there is immediate translation in both languages in the ear pieces worn by the Members of Parliament during daily debates. The Speaker in Parliament is a neutral position chosen by the Members of all parties, and the Speaker must be fluently bi-lingual in order to run the House.

Being fluently bi-lingual is worth extra points if you are applying to work for the Federal, Provincial, or Territorial Governments, or enlisting in the Canadian Armed Forces or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, or city Police services.

Immigrants to Canada have to take written tests ( before they can come here ) to determine how well they can speak, read, write and listen to either English of French. The higher their language score, the more points they get towards their invitation to come here, from the Canadian Federal Government. Those applicants who don't meet the minimum score of 450 have their application rejected.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has national TV and radio networks in both English and French that reach about 98 percent of the population of Canada, including isolated places in the high Arctic region through satellite transmissions.

if you want to learn French, the key is thinking the words in French in your mind, before speaking out loud.

Also associating situations with the words spoken helps remembering better.

These were recommended by Spanish, English and Italian teachers. Think in the language you want to learn.

Si vous voulez apprendre le français, la clé est de réfléchir mentalement aux mots français avant de les parler à voix haute.

Associer également des situations aux mots prononcés permet de mieux se souvenir.

Ceux-ci ont été recommandés par des professeurs d'espagnol, d'anglais et d'italien. Pensez dans la langue que vous souhaitez apprendre.

Typing your text in English into Google Translate will instantly give you a French translation. Therefore, it's just a case if reading it, retaining it and consign it to memory. Easy-peasy!

Espérant que ceci vous aides dans votre projet. You can write to me in French, I'll reply bilingually in order for you to associate the phrases.

Bienvenue, Welcome, Willkommen, Bienvenido, Benvenuto!

Thanks, @Supernatural I took French in high school and a year in college. I remember some of the words In fact, sometimes when I’m trying to communicate with a Spanish-speaking patient or family member, I can remember French terms before the Spanish ones! 😂
