Finding A "Community" Here

I'm new here, but there seems to be a wealth of topic areas. Fantastic!

But I wonder... it feels pretty easy to get lost in the sauce here. I suppose I was hoping to find smaller groups by geography, interests, and inclination. Not an echo chamber to boost confirmation of my opinions but a little bit of cohesion. People I can say "howdy" to several times a week and share a bit of common experience and commiseration with.

I'm not asking for this place to change, but I wonder if places like that can be found elsewhere. Suggestions?

I'm hoping for something, a net cast a little wider than local Senior Centers and church groups can offer. It doesn't have to be (and shouldn't be) voices identical to mine. Ideally I'd like to find a group of maybe 40 or so people of a somewhat similar age who can get along over time and go beyond that to enjoy each others' company.

A somewhat "local" slant might improve the odds of finding or drawing in people we knew in high school, college, etc. or who are at least aware of those places and their communities. Something to give us a commonality. That would be icing on the cake, though probably not likely to happen. I could see using messaging via Classmates.com or something to draw a few into such a group if it existed though.

Ok, enough babbling. I think you can probably get the gist of what I'm on about here. ;)

Thanks for replying.

I've tried the local library and "senior center" and the people I've talked to were quite positive. Sadly nothing came of it. It seems like people go there for specific things and then quickly lose interest. I'll keep at it though. I think I need to identify some interest we have in common that can give us an excuse to hang out.
 

Probably Facebook has the type of groups you're looking for....

When I first joined here I did get a little lost in the sauce.
My second time around I learned to go right to "what's new" and followed from there the threads that interested me.
 
Well, to start, I'd suggest you hang out here and look for people with similar interests. Then, when you've found someone, you can "Start a Conversation" with them. That option is, effectively, a private message space where you can exchange messages but the rest of us don't see them. I believe you can add more then one person to a conversation, so you could build a group of like minded folk. I have regular Conversations with a couple folk on here based on similar interests, and I'm sure others do too.

Start your own group or forum. Thatā€™s what I did for a large group of my friends who can invite anyone else to join if they think it would be a good fit bits a private group on Facebook and it works really well for me.

This is an open forum, meaning anyone can join. My Facebook group is private, by invitation only so I can control and limit membership. I donā€™t know of a third option.
 
I'll try to avoid social awkwardness here too. I've already seen some posts that come off as opinionated or crotchety and liable to set somebody off with very different views. I'm sure we'll try to make allowances for each other here since we're all getting up there in age to one degree or another. Offending others by accident or not thinking is probably inevitable from time to time though.

Craigslist has discussion forums on many different subjects. I should check out more of them myself sometime. But not now.
